The Lighting Industry Association (The LIA) has officially launched the TM65.2 Assured Product and Company Schemes, providing the lighting sector with an evidence-based, independently verified framework for embodied carbon reporting of lighting products.
As sustainability expectations continue to increase across the built environment and infrastructure sectors, the need for transparency and credibility in carbon reporting also grows. The schemes have been developed to drive consistency in reporting, increase market credibility and confidence in assured products and companies, level the playing field and reduce greenwash potential.
Unlike self-declared claims, the schemes operate through a rigorous third-party assessment process delivered by The LIA Laboratory. Assessment includes product disassembly and detailed evaluation of components, materials and weights, assembly locations, energy consumption, and tonnage calculations of produced goods.
The LIA brings lighting-specific technical expertise to the verification process, ensuring assessments align precisely with the TM65.2 methodology and reflect real-world lighting design and manufacturing practices.
Ali Kay, Sustainability Manager at The LIA, commented: “The industry has made significant progress in understanding embodied carbon, but consistency and credibility are critical if reporting is to drive meaningful change. TM65.2 Assured provides an evidence-based, independently verified framework that supports transparency and reduces the risk of greenwashing. By applying a lighting-specific approach, we are ensuring that calculations are robust, comparable and aligned with the realities of our sector.”
Both will be delivered through The LIA Laboratory, which is ISO 17065 accredited, the internationally recognised standard that defines how certification bodies must operate to ensure impartiality, technical validity and globally accepted decision-making. The laboratory is also UKAS and IECEE accredited, reinforcing confidence in the certification process.
Kieran Merrills, Certification Manager at The LIA Laboratory, added: “Certification must be rigorous, impartial and technically sound. TM65.2 Assured has been built around structured third-party verification, detailed technical assessment and clear governance. Our ISO 17065 certification ensures that every decision is made objectively and consistently, giving the market confidence that assured products and companies have met a defined and independently validated standard.”
The TM65.2 Assured schemes offer manufacturers and organisations a clear route to market differentiation while strengthening trust across the supply chain. By combining technical depth, third-party oversight and lighting-sector expertise, The LIA aims to support the industry’s transition toward more transparent and accountable sustainability reporting.
