Pensdown delivers state-of-the-art corporate gym refurbishment

Kent-based electrical contractor Pensdown, has successfully completed a high-specification gym refurbishment project, transforming an outdated corporate fitness space into a cutting-edge, energy-efficient facility designed to promote employee wellbeing. The six-week programme involved a full electrical redesign alongside extensive coordination with other trades to deliver a modern, functional and connected environment.

At the heart of the project was a comprehensive electrical infrastructure upgrade. The existing lighting installation was fully replaced with energy-efficient LED luminaires, selected for their low power consumption, long lifespan and superior colour rendering, critical for achieving consistent illumination across mirrored surfaces. The new lighting system incorporated DALI-compatible drivers, allowing for digital dimming and smart control, enabling different lighting scenes to be programmed for various gym zones such as cardio, strength and stretching areas.

To support the latest generation of Technogym equipment, Pensdown also installed precision-positioned power grommets set flush into the floor. This required close coordination with the carpentry team and equipment suppliers to ensure every outlet aligned exactly with the final equipment layout. Power distribution boards were reconfigured to accommodate the new load profile, with separate circuits provided for general power, mechanical ventilation and IT systems to ensure safety and reliability.

Recognising the growing importance of digital connectivity in modern wellness environments, the project included a robust data and Wi-Fi solution. Multiple ceiling-mounted access points (APs) were installed and tested to guarantee seamless wireless coverage, supporting both equipment integration and user connectivity for fitness tracking and streaming services.

In addition to the electrical works, Pensdown’s remit also extended to general fit-out and finishing trades, including the installation of full-height wall mirrors, bespoke timber slat wall features and high-durability rubberised flooring to withstand heavy equipment use. Every detail was specified to achieve a contemporary aesthetic while meeting functional requirements for safety and maintenance.

Despite a demanding schedule, the project was delivered on time and to a high standard through close collaboration between all disciplines. A proactive project management and flexible approach further enabled rapid responses to late design changes and on-site coordination challenges.

The result is a state-of-the-art workplace gym that not only enhances employee wellbeing but also reflects the client’s commitment to sustainability and innovation.
