Searchlight Electric proudly marks its 80th anniversary, celebrating eight decades of innovation, growth, and family-led leadership. Founded in 1945 by Captain Sidney Hamburger in a modest Salford office with just two employees, the company has grown into one of Britain’s leading decorative lighting suppliers, with a global presence and Europe’s largest lighting showroom.
From its inception, Searchlight has been a family business in every sense. That ethos continues under Managing Director Daniel Hamburger, Sidney’s grandson and the third generation to guide the company.
“This anniversary is deeply personal,” said Daniel Hamburger. “Searchlight’s journey has always been about more than just business. It’s about family, relationships and building something lasting. That feeling still permeates everything we do, from how we treat our team to how we serve our customers.”
A legacy of innovation
Searchlight’s success is built on innovation and the dedication of its people. Many employees have been with the company for decades, one recently celebrating 50 years of service. Their loyalty and experience, combined with the fresh ideas of newer team members, create a powerful blend driving the company forward.
In 1976, Searchlight became the first UK lighting manufacturer to adopt computer technology and has continued to lead with innovation. The 1990s marked international expansion with its first joint venture factory in China, while recent milestones – including opening a European distribution centre in 2023 and a flagship showroom in Germany in 2025 – showcase its ongoing growth and ambition.
New product portfolio launch
To mark the occasion, Searchlight has launched a unified catalogue combining its Searchlight, Project Collection and Lux & Belle brands. Featuring over 400 new products and nearly 3,000 total, the portfolio reflects the company’s commitment to design excellence and innovation. Looking ahead
As it enters its ninth decade, Searchlight remains firmly rooted in its founding values while embracing the future. With expanded European operations, continued investment in cutting-edge design and a strong family ethos, the company is well-positioned to illuminate homes and commercial spaces for generations to come.
