Zumtobel Lighting and acdc bring Junya Ishigami’s Serpentine Pavilion to life

Zumtobel Lighting and acdc will once again be sponsoring the annual Serpentine Pavilion, a highly anticipated, annual architectural commission, running from June to October 2019. Every year since 2000, the Serpentine Gallery has commissioned a temporary summer pavilion by a leading architect. Since 2013, AECOM, in collaboration with David Glover, have provided multidiscipline engineering and specialist lighting design services for the pavilion. This year’s lighting scheme has been developed using acdc’s PLAZA fittings. “We are delighted that Zumtobel will collaborate with the Serpentine again this year, bringing Junya Ishigami’s extraordinary structure to life this summer for London and the world to enjoy” remarked Yana Peel, CEO and Hans Ulrich Obrist, Artistic Director.

The series presents the work of an international architect or design team who has not completed a building in England at the time of the Gallery’s invitation and has showcased the first UK structures by some of the biggest names in international architecture. Junya Ishigami will be the nineteenth architect to accept the invitation to design a temporary Pavilion on the Serpentine Gallery’s lawn in Kensington Gardens. Isabel Zumtobel, Atelier of Light commented, “Visiting Junya Ishigami in Tokyo really inspired me as he has so much creativity and I am proud we managed to join forces with the Serpentine Pavilion and support Junya’s vision. Collaborating with architects and bringing their ideas to life always challenges our skills but we embrace these ideas in the knowledge that the experience develops us as a company. We are delighted to be a part of Junya Ishigami’s first project in the UK”.

Architect Junya Ishigami is delighted to be working with Zumtobel, commenting that “Working with Zumtobel is a pleasure because of their approach. Always trying to push the limit on what lighting can do yet with a distinct subtlety. For the Pavilion, their lights accentuate the different nuances of colours that each stone has to offer”. Both Zumtobel and acdc are keen to support the use of good design to provide better spaces in which to work and live, whilst celebrating the achievements of a wide diversity of architectural talent. Zumtobel and acdc will be supplying surface mounted PLAZA 10 and PLAZA 20 luminaires for the event to highlight the constructions and show them in the best possible light. The Serpentine Pavilion 2019 will be open from 21st June – 6th October 2019 with the Zumtobel and acdc event taking place on Wednesday 11th September.
