TRILUX deliver a sustainable lighting scheme for London’s fintech destination

British Land is investing £1.5 billion over ten years to transform Broadgate into a world-class destination for London. The campus hosts many of the world’s leading financial, legal, technology, and media companies and some of London’s best restaurants, bars, and retail brands.

155 Bishopsgate is one of the largest buildings on the Broadgate campus. Initially completed in 1988, Fletcher Priest Architects have since redesigned it. Today 155 Bishopsgate has 160,000 sq ft of prime office workspace available across five levels of the building. The transformation includes a complete refurbishment and expansion to the double-level receptions with a new lounge.

In the most significant pedestrianised neighbourhood in Central London, combined with stunning views over Spitalfields, this space is suitable for start-ups to global businesses, sustainably designed and delivered with a focus on wellbeing, community, and futureproofing.

When it came to the lighting, sustainable operation was a top consideration; the objective: to provide the lowest amount of connected load for the layout, enabling owners to reduce energy consumption and meet the architectural design aspiration.

Like British Land, one of the biggest concerns today for property developers and landowners is achieving net-zero operation. With a huge Government push to meet targets for 2050 and changing regulations for the climate emergency, tenants and owners want to see efficient operation and alignment with company values.

Lighting design affects everything on a project, from planning and performance to sellable value, health and wellbeing.

TRILUX lighting worked with M&E consultants and lighting designers Hoare Lea for the refurbished office spaces. Later in the project, alongside contractors Michael J Lonsdale and Chapman BDSP to further develop the design to optimise space and meet the architect’s aesthetics.

The final scheme included a custom product based on the popular LC60 light channel, which later became known as LC80. The light lines were integrated into the ceiling’s acoustic raft to deliver a seamless flawless effect, meeting all the lighting requirements with a clean aesthetic, and reducing the noise levels in the office.

Additionally, the TRILUX comprehensive downlight range Sonnos which performs all lighting tasks in a uniform design was utilised throughout the five floors in white to blend into the interior design.

The back-of-house area is lit with TRILUX’s Aragon Fit weatherproof luminaries – Aargon Fit combines the highest quality of light and efficiency and can be perfectly adapted to on-site requirements thanks to its modular design.

The Broadgate development is progressing towards net-zero carbon with new refurbishments contributing towards a 34% reduction in energy intensity in existing buildings at Broadgate since 2019, cutting carbon emissions by over 13,400 tonnes and saving customers on their energy bills.

The refurbished building has achieved a BREEAM Very good rating and WiredScore’ Gold and is targeting Platinum.
