Nulty has designed a fully flexible lighting scheme for the largest showroom and multi-purpose design store in the Middle East in just four weeks. The future proofed lighting system showcases leading design studio Casamia’s ever-changing product range of bespoke furniture, flooring, tiles and wallpaper, and has won Retail Lighting Project of the Year by the Light Middle East Awards 2018 (25th September 2018).

The concept behind Casamia’s new, state-of-the-art, 4,100 sq m Dubai showroom is to offer a welcoming one-stop-shop for interior designers, architects, hoteliers, developers and high net worth individuals where they can experience world-class products in context before they buy. Casamia has divided up the 3,500 sq m ground floor and 600 sq m mezzanine level into distinct, partitioned zones or room sets, creating realistic, fully furnished hotel rooms, a spa, hammam, barber’s shop and even a massage parlour. Visitors are encouraged to spend time in each zone to fully appreciate the products, materials and furniture that Casamia supplies, and there are numerous spaces where designers and clients can brainstorm and design their projects.

Effective and flexible lighting is of paramount importance for such a unique and world-class showroom, as Casamia plans to update the room sets regularly. After numerous design changes on site, Nulty provided a quick, flexible and realistic design solution in only four weeks.

A track system in the main spaces allows the angles of each light and the number of fixtures to be easily adjusted. A fully dimmable DALI (Digital Addressable Lighting Interface) system creates different atmospheres and light levels depending on the function of each space. It can be modified to highlight customised tiled walls, wallpaper or flooring with hidden linear lighting; wash key pieces of furniture with light; and even control light levels for presentations and Q&As. All LED fittings are a high CRI (Colour Rendering Index) to accentuate the many different finishes,
colours, and textures on display whilst achieving a true representation of the products on offer. In meeting rooms, task lighting forms pools of light above tables, whilst joinery lighting integrated in the shelves creates layers of light and gives the users more flexibility to control their own space. Suspended pendant lights provide accent lighting whilst also complementing the wider interior design scheme.

The different zones or room sets in the vast showroom have very distinct design styles, from the eye-catching graffiti pattern of the industrial slide which links the mezzanine floor to the ground floor, to the sleek five-star hotel rooms and moody, inviting spa facilities.

“The challenge was coming up with a cohesive strategy for the entire store, whilst maintaining a separate mood for each individual space based on the design,” explains Ahmed Saliem, Projects Director at Nulty. “We treated this project as 25 separate projects, each with its own unique requirements and outcomes. Commissioning took up most of our time as we had to balance each room individually again and again, and make sure that adjacent spaces were synchronized together.”
