NORKA expands its business activities

Specialist luminaire manufacturer NORKA acquires the Traffic & Industries division of Swareflex, a Swarovski Group company. It includes the development, manufacture and sale of lighting systems for road and tunnel lighting.

For more than 70 years, NORKA has been developing technically advanced lighting solutions with a high protection rating, customised for special environmental conditions and visual tasks. Train stations, bridges, production workshops, cold stores, logistics centres, multi-storey car parks, ports or sports facilities – all these are typical areas of application for NORKA. With the founding of NORKA Automation in 2016, the company also offers the appropriate control solution for the luminaires and the integration into building services. “The new acquisition is an outstanding addition to the existing product portfolio and will further strengthen NORKA’s market position as a company specialising in lighting technology”, explains Florian Schönfeld, Managing Director of NORKA, and goes on to say: “We expect to have many synergies, especially in the development and manufacture of fully encapsulated luminaire systems.”

Johannes Oberdanner, Managing Director of Swareflex, adds: “We have found a longstanding successful company in NORKA, whom we trust, because they share the same values as Swareflex in terms of reliability, customer focus and innovative spirit. This will ensure the customary high quality that is essential for customers and subsequently for road users.” Swareflex will focus on its core business in the future – the development and marketing of solutions with glass reflectors for traffic safety and individual applications for light control with glass lenses.

In order to serve the market in Austria and in the neighbouring countries, NORKA is planning to establish a competence centre in Wattens/Tyrol as a wholly owned subsidiary and will be supported along the way by five highly specialised Swareflex employees. Under the management of Florian Schönfeld, the intention is to reliably continue with the existing projects and initiate and look after new tunnel and road lighting projects from the NORKA competence centre in the future. In addition, the trusted NORKA sales partners in Austria and Switzerland will receive local support.

The next few months will be used to organise the transition of the business, implement the transfer of know-how and fulfil the production engineering requirements in the NORKA plant in Dörverden-Hülsen. NORKA is therefore planning larger investments in order to relocate the tunnel lighting production and finishing line based in Vomp in Austria to Dörverden-Hülsen by the end of 2019.
