Mizzi Studio unveils spectacular light installation – ‘The Firekraken’ – at the Restaurant & Bar Design Awards

‘The Firekraken’, a dynamic light installation by award-winning architecture and design practice, Mizzi Studio, was unveiled at the 10th Restaurant & Bar Design Awards ceremony in Kings Cross.

Mizzi Studio is one of five previous award-winning designers who were invited by the Restaurant & Bar Design Awards organisers to create a huge three-dimensional tapestry on the theme of ‘celebration’, to mark the 10th anniversary of the awards. Mizzi Studio’s design was theatrically revealed during the ceremony, alongside designs by B3 Designers, Biasol, Finch Interiors and Keane Brands.

Taking the theme of ‘celebration’ as a point of departure, Mizzi Studio has created an immersive installation that simulates dancing fireworks, embracing the playful and sensory nature of pyrotechnic displays. The acrylic assemblages capture explosive moments in time and freeze them in their most beautiful state.

To bring the static sculptures to life, Mizzi Studio looked to nature as the key inspiration behind the practice’s wider design approach. Just as fireworks light up the night sky, bioluminescent organisms glow and glitter in the ocean. Mizzi Studio have programmed LED light strips to evoke this spectacular natural phenomenon, bringing a kinetic energy to the display so that it appears like a family of sea creatures dancing together in the deep.

The specially conceived installation, ‘The Firekraken’, comprises a series of five sculptures, made by manipulating clear acrylic tubes and arranging them in unique assemblages, before passing addressable LED light strips through them. The hundreds of LED lights have then been programmed to react to sound, and choreographed to a carefully selected soundtrack, Living on My Own by Freddie Mercury.

“Fireworks can be breath taking and nature’s own fireworks, from fireflies to jellyfish, are utterly entrancing. We wanted to fuse the two into an installation that is at once abstract and full of life” commented Ashwini Ashokkumar, Designer at Mizzi Studio.

Mizzi Studio was recognised at the 2017 Restaurant & Bar Design Awards for their work on the Colicci Café at Westfield Stratford, London, which won in the ‘Outside’ category and was shortlisted in a further three categories. Jonathan Mizzi, Director of Mizzi Studio was subsequently selected to join the 2018 Restaurant & Bar Product Design Awards judging panel.
