Lux Awards 2018 Winners

Some of the best lighting products, projects and companies leading innovation and change were recognised at the 2018 Lux Awards in London last week.

The Awards were presented in front of 800 senior lighting professionals at a gala event at the O2 InterContinental on the final night of the LuxLive 2018 exhibition.

From over 200 nominations, the judges drew up the initial shortlists, tested products and visited projects the length and breadth of the UK to see them in action for themselves.

Lux Person of the Year

The person who has made an outstanding
contribution to the lighting industry in 2017

In association with Zumtobel

Winner: Paul Ruffles

Lighting design engineer Paul Ruffles has dedicated a major part of his career to the service of the industry and is, say the judges, an ‘unsung hero’ of the sector. He is currently editor-in-chief of the SLL Lighting Handbook and has completely revised it – with the assistance of various experts –  for 2018.  Due to be published imminently, it has increased in size from 22 chapters to 32.

Paul has been the principal of Lighting Design & Technology since founding the practice in 1992. Throughout his career he has contributed to the organising and administering of his profession both through his work with the Engineering Institutions and through national and international bodies.

These have included the National Illumination Committee, the International Standards Organisation, Lux Europa and the British Standards Organisation. He is a past-president of the Society of Light and Lighting (then called the CIBSE Lighting Division) which represents the interests of most of the senior members of the lighting profession.

His projects included The Holiday Inn, Kensington and a new visitors’ centre for Kew Gardens. He provided lighting support to Buro Happold’s offices in London, Leeds and Saudi Arabia.

Paul has written many lighting related articles in all sections of the professional lighting press. He also makes numerous presentations to technical conferences and to learned society meetings.
