It is clear that the time to act is now, without action the planet will continue to heat for many decades unless there are important reductions in carbon dioxide (CO2) and other greenhouse gas emissions.

Lucent Lighting put forward its aim to reduce plastics in their packaging, analyse their waste and recycling opportunities to assess materials within their products over the past year, along with achieving ISO14001:2015 Environmental Management Certification. Lucent Lighting have made huge improvements in the first two aims and the last is an ongoing process although they have been able to manufacture some fixtures free from plastic (except in the COB). The company plans to actively continue to reduce its emissions as much as possible throughout the business over the coming years.

Lucent has also teamed up with Carbon Neutral Britain™, the UK carbon offsetting initiative. Founded in 2020, their projects have already offset over 500,000 tonnes of CO2 and planted over 3 million trees providing essential habitats for wildlife.

As Lucent is very much a global business but headquartered in London, they wanted to ensure that the projects they are working on encompassed both. They have chosen to support the following two portfolios:
  • The Carbon Neutral Britain Climate Fund™ which supports Wind, Solar, Hydro and Cook Store projects focused on developing countries around the world. Most recently Carbon Neutral Britain™ have supported wind and solar projects in Chile, India and the Philippines, hydro power in Fiji and Brazil and Cook stove projects in Kenya.
  • The Carbon Neutral Britain Woodland Fund™ supporting reforestations, deforestation prevention and woodland management projects focusing on the positive impact of local wildlife, ecology and biodiversity. Recent projects include woodland planting in the UK, reforestation after the wildfires in Australia and preventing deforestation in the Amazon. 10% of the budget is spent on sustainable projects in Britain, for Britain.
Michael Dunk, Managing Director of Lucent Lighting said: “We are delighted that we have been able to be awarded Carbon Neutral status as a business and see this as a continuation of our commitment over the past few years to be as sustainable as possible across the business process.”
