ILP Membership Myth Busting – Get the professional recognition you deserve

ILP’s new Membership Services Manager Karen Suggett has noticed that there are some uncertainties surrounding their upgrading process and so would like to put these myths to bed for you.

Below are some of the examples they have heard from ILP members surrounding upgrades.

  • You must have been an ILP affiliate for years before you can apply.

This is NOT TRUE anyone can apply to upgrade at any time.

  • I do not know where to start.

As always, at the beginning and this is just by downloading an application form from the ILP website. Karen is always around to help at any stage.

  • I have heard it is such a lengthy process.

This is NOT TRUE 5 Steps is all it takes to upgrade your membership.

  • You must be an engineer?

This is NOT TRUE. The ILP encourages anyone engaged in lighting in some way shape or form to apply to become MILP and you do not have to be an engineer to do this.

  • You will not hear anything back for a long time?

This is NOT TRUE The ILP aims to complete all upgrades within a three-month time schedule. It all depends on the quality of reports that are submitted, and the amount of alterations suggested by your assessors.

  • My CPD records are not up to date.

No problem, log onto your ILP Portal and if you have not already set this up, you can create a MyCareerPath account and prepare and update CPD records easily and quickly.

  • I do not know anyone who could propose me.

This could simply be your employer, a member of another professional body or even a work colleague in a responsible position. The ILP can talk this through with you to help you identify suitable proposers.

If you have been furloughed or have time on your hands, then now might be the ideal opportunity to apply for an upgrade. Have courage in yourself and your abilities – and remember, the ILP are here to help you succeed!
