IET Lecture: Graphene Based Ultra-Fast Charge Energy Storage & Enablement

In conjunction with Zap&Go, Jonathan from Silent Koala will discuss the all-time global energy storage challenge.  How do you store vast amounts of electrical energy that will satisfy future demands?  He will present his understanding of what the global economy is likely to experience as a result of current energy requirements, as we move towards electric vehicles and renewable resources.  The differences between current battery technologies and the solutions offered by supercapacitors are discussed, and the talk looks at so-called ‘graphene’ solutions and other advanced nano-carbon developments that are impacting upon this industry.


Dr Jonathan R. Tuck completed his first degree in Mechanical, Materials and Manufacture Engineering at the University of Newcastle Upon Tyne, with honours in Materials Science and Engineering.  He went on to complete his doctorate at the University of Oxford in mathematical energy modelling, investigating indentation characterisation for coated systems.  He embarked upon his career in the field of Fuel Cells, where he took a polymer component from lab scale to full scale manufacture.  With a refractory metals company, he led the first team in the world to Friction Stir Weld (FSW) thick-section steel, and worked on construction of the Eclipse Airliner.  After a brief business sabbatical, he co-founded a company called Zap&Go, a developer and supplier of ultra-fast-charge supercapacitors.  He has a wealth of knowledge and experience across the board of Materials Science and Engineering, and the process for creating successful start-ups.  He is particularly passionate about energy and energy storage, in today’s fast-paced environment of innovation, demand and opportunity.
