How to be Brilliant Talks – 28th November 2018

Especially for students, interns, apprentices and new entrants to the lighting profession The Institution of Lighting Professionals invites you to FREE, fun, friendly evening talks in London and Edinburgh on 28th November 2018.

How to be Brilliant – Edinburgh
A talk about Charles Rennie Mackintosh: Lighting Designer
Presented by Kevan Shaw, Design Director at KSLD

Kevin Shaw says ‘I have now travelled in Charles Rennie Mackintosh’s footsteps twice to recreate the original lighting in the construction of his competition winning “House for an Art Lover” and currently in the restoration of the fire damaged Glasgow School of Art. While he is recognised as an epoch changing architect, interior designer and furniture designer, his lighting has been relegated to the decorative nature of some of the light fitting designs.
Coming to his work with the eyes of a lighting designer, I find that there is much more thought in the designs than the simple decorative aspects.’

This talk will show specific examples of CRM’s lighting design and illustrate from the research undertaken the
working methods of the period. It will also illustrate parallels between practice today and in the period. Kevan will also demonstrate the research methods and outcomes as well as methods being developed to recreate a historic lighting scheme from a century ago in the 21st century.

When: Wednesday 28th November 2018
Time: 6pm onwards
Where: The Glass Room, Merchiston campus, Edinburgh Napier University

How to be brilliant – London
How to be Brilliant: with Light, Colour and Space
Presented by Magdalena Gomez, Associate, Elektra Lighting Design

Magdalena discovered that there are certain places which trespass any borderlines of time and culture and transform themselves into real sanctuaries.

Using certain tools, we can shape and give character and meaning to spaces. These tools can be as intangible as light or bold as the use of colour to change the perception in a given space. Magdalena will show you how to give
meaning through the use of colours and light and how the culture affects the perception and character of the space.

Magdalena will share her journey with a case study from Mexico and how this has been used as inspiration for many generations of famous architects. She will also showcase some of Elektra’s projects to demonstrate how they use some of these principles and apply them into their projects.

When: Wednesday 28th November 2018
Time: Doors open at 6pm, the talk starts at 6.30pm, followed by complimentary drinks. Doors close at 9pm.
Where: Body & Soul, 99-119 Rosebery Ave, Clerkenwell, London EC1R 4RE
