Halliburton Lights Way to Future Efficiency

Halliburton is one of the world’s largest oil field services companies with operations in more than 70 countries. The company recently reassessed its lighting strategy with a view to reducing costs and cutting energy emissions.

Beginning first with sites in Aberdeen and Great Yarmouth, Halliburton engaged the services of Zumtobel Group Services (ZGS) to transform legacy lighting platforms and integrate a new LED solution that would meet immediate requirements and secure a path to future lighting quality and efficiency. ZGS provided Halliburton with a lighting as a service model whereby all installation and ongoing maintenance is handled by ZGS, and where the upgrade is effectively financed by savings generated from day one onwards of the new lighting solution.

Previously, the company’s lighting management was undertaken by on-site teams on a sporadic basis with minimal advantages in terms of cost-saving or energy reduction. Having recently outsourced its facilities management in the UK, the company drilled down to identify additional specific tasks that would benefit from expert third-party management. Lighting was an obvious area for improvement.

Tim Wright, Region Manager Real Estate, Halliburton, comments: “We were aware that our lighting throughout the company could be upgraded. We wanted to eliminate ‘blind spot’ areas that suffered from poor light coverage and we wanted much more control over where and when areas were lit. We also wanted to increase efficiency and improve working environments.”

The solution uses a portfolio of advanced LED luminaires with integral controls throughout warehouses and storage buildings. This enables the harvesting of natural daylight and will switch the luminaire to 10% output on absence. Specifically, the CRAFT industrial luminaire combines low power and low maintenance needs delivering consistent light level throughout its service life. Improved light levels help to reduce error rates and ensure that Halliburton’s employees are able to work comfortably and proficiently.

Further efficiency is gained utilising presence/occupancy sensors throughout the office and circulation areas. Sensors also operate in locker rooms and washrooms, with implementation designed to impact minimally on existing working conditions.

The new solution is expected to achieve annual energy savings of 65% across each converted site and Halliburton is looking to realise cost-savings of £1.8m from conversion of six sites over a ten year period.

Tim Wright concludes: “The energy and cost-savings are significant but this will also have a beneficial impact on health and safety and quality at work. Our sites at Aberdeen and Great Yarmouth, in Norfolk, are now nearing completion and further sites are being assessed and proposed. We look forward to a continued, successful partnership.”
