International Day of Light 2018

The International Day of Light is a worldwide celebration of the impact of light and light-sciences in our society. Young researchers and students around the world led an initiative to translate the International Day of Light logo into 33 languages. A second round of translations will be available in March.

Following the collaboration for the International Year of Light 2015, International Day of Light are delighted to announce that the International Association of Physics Students (IAPS) will contribute to the International Day of Light by organising new activities and participating with a delegation of volunteers to the IDL Flagship event at the UNESCO headquarters in Paris, France. The involvement of students from their partners EPS, SPIE, OSA, IEEE was a fundamental contributor to the success of 2015, and will be also an important part of the International Day of Light 2018.

In the past month, IDL have also welcomed new organisations supporting the goals of the International Day of Light and several new national nodes.
A1 Lighting are pleased to be a media partner to the International Day of Light.

Regarding worldwide IDL 2018 activities, the event programme is increasing every week, including now events in over 48 countries/regions as well as worldwide actions.

Día Internacional de la Luz – Flagship IDL event in Spain

The flagship event of the IDL in Spain in 2018 will take place in Madrid on 16th May, hosted by Universidad Complutense de Madrid, Faculty of Physics. The morning session program will be devoted to scientific and technical talks in Optics and Photonics delivered by Spanish experts in the field. The morning session will end with a discussion panel dedicated to the current projection of light technologies in the society. This panel will be handled with the presence of technological companies and education area representatives. The afternoon session will focus on the educational community (Middle School,High School and University students) so that a wider audience will be expected. The session will include a plenary talk by Prof. Glenn Boreman (University of North Carolina, USA).

Photonics in the Preparation, Information and Recovery from Hurricane Maria

Hurricane Maria devastated Puerto Rico on 20th September 2017. Before and during the storm, until the winds and rains took down the power and communications systems, people were informed and could communicate, much of which was thanks to optics and photonics.

Light and Life
Location: Yamoussoukro, Ivory Coast
A conference and an exhibition showcasing photonics and optics applications will be organised to bring together, the government, the local population, all the physics teachers and some of the students in the high school in our city. This will be preceded by local media advertising. The event is sponsored by SPIE.

The Discovery of the Infrared
Location: Worldwide
The International Astronomical Union Network for Astronomy School Education (IAU-NASE) will celebrate the International Day of Light by encouraging people worldwide to perform William Herschel’s historic experiment that turned out on the discovery of infrared light.
