Recolight CEO Nigel Harvey and marketing and communications manager Suzanne Castine received SLL honorary fellowships at the AGM in CIBSE’s headquarters in London last week

Commenting on the award, the outgoing Society of Light and Lighting president Kristina Allison, said: “The honorary fellowship recognises a significant contribution not only of services to the Society but to the wider lighting profession. It’s sanctioned by the Executive Committee of the SLL. The work that both do with Recolight has a positive impact on the industry and is incredible.”

Usually, one award is given each year, but this year an exception was made. Previous recipients have included Kevin McCloud in 2010, Jonathan Speirs in 2003, and Philip, The Duke of Edinburgh back in 1959.

F Mark Ltd founder Simon Fisher FSLL and Circular Lighting Report editor Ray Molony gave the citations for Harvey and Castine respectively.

On accepting his award, Nigel Harvey said: “I’m absolutely delighted to receive the honorary fellowship of the Society of Light and Lighting. The recognition of professional peers, colleagues and friends is uniquely special. My sincere thanks to the SLL Executive Committee for the award. But I’m only the helmsman at Recolight. We’ve an amazing team, who all play vital roles and this award belongs to us all.”

And Suzanne Castine said: “Thank you to the SLL executive committee for recognising the work I do. Marketing is an overhead, so we’re constantly looking at ways to reduce cost. And as a not-for-profit funded by our WEEE Scheme Lighting manufacturer Members, it’s even more critical for me to be mindful of spend. Therefore, I keep our work in house and don’t use agencies. We were recognised for going above and beyond and were in a room full of lighting professionals who do that too. So many have helped Recolight along the way, presenting at webinars and conferences, offering support, guidance and help.”

As a Sustaining Member of the SLL, Recolight are part of a network of businesses who collaborate to give financial, technical and practical support to a wide range of Society initiatives.

When Pendle Borough Council set out to replace ageing HID lanterns at the Steven Burke Sports Hub (a free-access, 1.1 km cycling circuit and BMX pump track in Nelson), it became a true community endeavour. Named after hometown hero Sir Steven Burke, a double Olympic gold medallist, the facility now boasts safer, more sustainable illumination thanks to Thorn Lighting staff who ride the circuit alongside Pendle Forest Cycling Club members. The upgrade respects local wildlife and shines a spotlight on community spirit and sporting excellence.

Illuminating a community hub

The inspiration for this upgrade came directly from the track itself. Paul Whittaker, who was working for Thorn at the time and is an avid club rider and event organiser, together with Key Account Manager Craig Lensky, who rode with the club in the 1970s, approached Pendle Borough Council with a vision to modernise the Sports Hub’s lighting. The original lighting and electrical installations were carried out by a local contractor (within a 5-mile radius), who also fitted the new replacement luminaires for this upgrade. Working in close partnership with club members, council officers, and Thorn’s project team, new luminaires were manufactured in Thorn’s Spennymoor factory and a local wholesaler less than a mile away from the track, ensuring high quality and low carbon footprint.

A collaborative lighting solution

Faced with forty-one fixed column positions around the circuit, Thorn’s Isaro Pro LED lanterns were selected for their precision optics and robust construction. Each lantern contains 24 LEDs with specifically tuned drive currents and appropriate lenses, these were configured to provide even, glare-controlled light across the entire track surface while keeping spill to a minimum beyond the boundary. The 4000K colour temperature LED chipsets ensures excellent visual clarity for riders and coaches during early-morning training or late-evening sessions.

Overcoming project challenges

Addressing dark spots between the existing fixed-position columns required precise optical specification. Thorn engineers produced a Lighting Design solution and conducted multiple site visits to select the correct distribution and lumen levels to check uniformity and light levels throughout the loop. Protecting the nocturnal environment was equally critical: by eliminating upward light and minimising horizontal spill, the scheme safeguards the bats, owls, hedgehogs and rabbits that share Swinden Playing Fields.

Delivering benefits for riders and wildlife

Since commissioning, the LED upgrade has cut energy consumption by approximately 45 percent, freeing council funds for coaching and track improvements. The Isaro Pro’s uniform, low-glare illumination enhances rider confidence and safety, while precise beam control preserves dark corridors for wildlife. Maintenance demands have dropped dramatically thanks to the lanterns’ long life and accessible gear trays, keeping the circuit open and welcoming to all.

Tricia Wilson, Project Manager (Engineering & Cycling), Pendle Borough Council, said: “This wasn’t just a lighting upgrade; it was a community effort. Club members and Thorn staff all contributed. The result is a safer, greener facility that honours Steven Burke’s legacy.”

Created by Whitecroft Lighting to improve the lighting and construction supply chain, Geopak™ slashes waste by reducing single-use packaging and increases product traceability with smart, connected devices.

The smart, reusable construction packaging and product-tracking system beat off competition from more than 10,000 entries from across 68 countries to secure an award for Service, System and Process Design, and Service Design.

Geopak™ delivers two major new benefits to the lighting and construction supply chain. Firstly, it enables greater trackability of lighting products and materials by delivering new levels of traceability, thereby improving efficiency and reducing losses.

Secondly, it radically reduces construction waste by introducing a new form of reusable packaging that is set to eliminate millions of kilograms of single-use packaging.

This is achieved by replacing traditional single-use cardboard with collapsible, reusable crates or totes that can be used repeatedly to transport materials.

Geopak™ also improves transportation efficiency by maximising space and allowing more lighting equipment to be transported per journey, while protecting luminaires and other valuable lighting equipment during transit.

Geopak™ is estimated to prevent 100,000 cardboard boxes from entering the construction supply chain over the next two years.

Matt Paskin, Solutions and Marketing Director at Whitecroft Lighting, said: “Everyone at Whitecroft Lighting is absolutely thrilled to have won such a prestigious international award and this is another demonstration of how Whitecroft is innovating all aspects of the lighting supply chain – from design through to delivery.

As a lighting manufacturer, it’s essential that we find new and innovative ways to embed sustainability, and not just through our commercial lighting products. With Geopak™ we’re addressing one of the industry’s biggest challenges, packaging waste, by using a smarter, reusable delivery system.”

Environment Agency data released this month has uncovered the scale of WEEE non-compliance of product sold through online marketplaces.

For the last four and a half months of 2025, online marketplaces were legally required to report sales of electrical products imported into the UK via their platforms. And that data showed an annual market share of 13.8 percent for consumer lamps, and 11.8 percent for consumer luminaires.

Commenting on the news, Recolight CEO Nigel Harvey, said: “At last we can see the true extent of WEEE non-compliance through online marketplaces. What is more, one of the largest operators, eBay, does not yet appear in the list of compliant producers. So, once their data is also included, and it is grossed up into a full year equivalent, market shares could well be over 25 percent for consumer luminaires, and over 35 percent for consumer lamps.”

He added: “The really good news for the lighting industry is that, at long last, online sellers will be forced to pay their share of WEEE costs. Recolight has worked tirelessly to see this change introduced over many years, and we are very grateful to current and former Defra staff who made this happen.”

The WEEE regulations were amended last year, and from 12th August 2025 online marketplaces were required to start collecting data for all electrical goods brought into the UK via their platforms. Market shares are calculated using the weight of products placed on the market.

Vanemuine is Estonia’s oldest, largest and most visited theatre. Based in the country’s culturally vibrant and picturesque second city of Tartu, it has recently invested in more Robe moving lights as part of Estonia’s ‘Green Turn’ sustainability initiative, whereby all major theatres and performing arts centres are transitioning to LED stage lighting.

Under the technical leadership of Andres Sarv, Vanemuine’s head of lighting, all three of its auditoriums – The Grand Building of Theatre, The Small Building of Vanemuine and The Harbour Theatre (black box) – have benefitted from carefully considered investment in Robe lighting technology over the years, with the most recent purchases being in LED luminaires.

This has seen an additional 14 T1 Profiles, 14 T2 Profiles, 11 T11 Profiles, 8 LEDBeam 350s, 8 LedPOINTES, six iParFect 150 FQW RGBWs and four T32 Cyc Slims added to the Vanemuine lighting inventory.

All these plus other fixtures are now at the disposal of Vanemuine’s own lighting department for all the shows and touring productions that they produce, as well as for the incoming and guest LDs who are visiting with numerous national and international shows.

Many of the new Robe fixtures were used on the acclaimed 2025 production of La bohème, lit by Swedish lighting designer Palle Palmé.

While many of the new lights will reside in The Grand Building, servicing the largest and most complex productions, they can be moved around as and where needed between the three auditoriums – and they can also go on the road with Vanemuine’s various touring shows.

In The Grand Building, two RoboSpot systems are also new – supplied as with all the LED fixtures by Robe’s Tallinn-based distributor E&T Valgus – but these are separate from the green turn investment. However, they can be used with many of the Robe fixtures, giving greater flexibility and enabling better follow spot angles to do the job.

Vanemuine has been using Robe fixtures for at least the last 14 years, and the recent arrivals also prompted them to replace some of the older fixtures like MMX Spots and 600E Spots, which were still working … but have now been replaced in all the houses, giving a much more powerful, energy-efficient and contemporary set of creative options.

In some cases, the older Robe moving lights – like LEDWash 1200s – are still in active service and used for powerful back light or other effects. Andres comments that this reliability and longevity are a great asset and one of several features that keep them returning to the brand for moving lights and intelligent LED fixtures.

The Small Building already had T1s in the house rig, but the Harbour Theatre’s older Robe DLX Spots – in residence since 2013 – were replaced with some of the new batch, joining the existing Robe LEDWash 600s in there, together with a host of conventional lights.

The new LedPOINTES, while more of a multipurpose than a purely theatrical fixture, will mainly stay in The Grand Building as they are ideal for musicals, and were “very well priced,” commented Andres.

He commented that the optics of the LEDBeam 350 are “great” for theatre, and naturally, they are delighted to now have the additional power of the T2s in the house.

Andres believes that Robe’s T-Series luminaires are excellent for any performance space: “The breadth of the T-Series ranges is fantastic, there is a fixture to cover multiple needs, and Robe can provide a very consistent solution in terms of light quality and colour management.”

He is also very enthused by the potential of the T32 Cyc Slims to provide rich, smooth and even coverage for cycs and set pieces, and the four units will replace 12 heavy lights that were previously used for this task.

Back in 2001, Andres recalls, Palle had been the first visiting LD to use new moving lights that had just been installed in The Grand Building, and in 2025, he was delighted to engage in another Vanemuine first in using the Robe T2 Profiles in the same venue.

Andres works alongside a lighting crew of 10 at Vanemuine across all three venues. While they primarily present theatrical shows and some orchestral concerts, the pace and turnarounds are very much rock ‘n’ roll in style and speed.

The house lighting rigs need to be as dynamic and flexible as possible, and Robe products are currently adding reliable and creative production value, together with the all-important “outstanding” local support from E&T Valgus.

Estonian National Theatre Vanemuine was founded in 1870 and is internationally famous and renowned for its action-packed programme of spectacular and eye-popping productions that embrace drama, opera, ballet, large-scale musicals, and orchestral concerts.

Vanemuine is known for its high-quality productions and has been recognised with numerous awards and accolades throughout its history.

In 2026, Vanemuine and Eesti Kontsert will bring Richard Wagner’s tetralogy Der Ring des Nibelungen to the Saaremaa Opera Festival, beginning with Part I, Das Rheingold. In the following years, all four operas of the Ring Cycle will be presented, directed by Dutch opera director and set designer Michiel Dijkema.

Signify has launched Brighter Lives, Better World 2030, a new program designed to expand the reach of impactful, energy and resource-efficient lighting to improve lives, save energy, and preserve resources. The program is supported by new initiatives that support customer sustainability ambitions.

“Brighter Lives, Better World 2030 is designed to deliver solutions that improve lives, save energy, and make better use of resources – which is exactly what our customers are asking for,” said As Tempelman, CEO of Signify. “It shows that impact and opportunity go hand in hand, as we create real value for society, while building a stronger, more resilient company.”

Driving impact where it matters most

Focusing on customers’ most pressing challenges, Brighter Lives, Better World 2030 responds to rising demand for efficient, connected and electrified solutions. Addressing increasing demand for electricity1 and volatile pricing, resource scarcity and the need for healthier, safer, more resilient and livable environments – the program transforms the potential of light into meaningful impact.

“We’re proud to introduce the third chapter of Brighter Lives, Better World. Our new program builds on the progress of the past decade, remaining fully committed to our 2040 net zero ambition, with new targets that focus on reducing the energy and resource consumption of our customers, while continuing to drive innovations that improve safety & security, health and well-being,” said Maurice Loosschilder, Head of Sustainability at Signify.

Benefits beyond illumination

Signify continues to expand the role of lighting that is designed to improve quality of life, support more welcoming and productive indoor environments, enhance safety and security in cities and communities, enable more efficient food production, and increase access to solar lighting.

By the end of 2030, 41 percent of revenues will come from solutions that support benefits beyond illumination, rising from 31 percent in 2024.

Energy efficiency as a growth accelerator

Energy efficiency is a powerful enabler of electrification and the energy transition. Through continuous advances in LED and connected lighting, Signify helps customers reduce energy demand, manage costs, and lower emissions.

By the end of 2030, Signify commits to:

Cumulatively saving 60 TWh of energy for customers

Achieving a 35 percent reduction in portfolio CO₂ emission intensity annualized

Since introducing the Green Switch program in 2020, Signify has supported over 37,000 projects with cities across the globe, helping over 10,000 local authorities to switch their lighting systems from conventional to connected LED. An expanded Signify Switch program offers guidance on how efficient LED and connected lighting can advance energy and cost savings, and emissions reduction, as well as how to improve the quality of indoor and outdoor light, contribute to street safety and install solar lighting where the grid may not be available. Customers can receive support in choosing the right lighting products, systems, and services, as well as identifying sources of finance and funding.

Resource efficiency and circular value

To advance the circular economy, Signify will scale durable, upgradable, repairable, and recyclable products, alongside circular services. These solutions are designed for circularity, following a “use less, use longer, use again” framework that aims to reduce the consumption of virgin materials and energy while delivering long-term customer value.

Signify Circle revenues will include four categories:

Signify Circle products

Light as a Service

Remanufacture

Spare parts & upgrade kits

These products and services will constitute Signify Circle, a new initiative for professional customers to support their circular economy ambitions. It delivers products, services and business models that are aligned to well-defined circularity criteria, alongside clear and transparent labelling and customer education.

“Our customers want products they can trust – that last for a long time and can adapt to their changing needs,” said Sophie Breton, President, Professional Business, Europe at Signify. “Signify Circle will help our professional customers in Europe to make informed choices about the products and services they need to support their circular economy ambitions.”

Starting in Europe, Signify aims to grow circular product and service revenues in its Professional business from 10 percent to 27.5 percent by the end of 2030.

Built on a foundation of responsible business

Brighter Lives, Better World 2030 is underpinned by Signify’s long-term commitments to low nature-impact manufacturing, inclusive workplaces, fair working conditions throughout the value chain, and expanding access to lighting for underserved communities – ensuring growth is built on transparency, inclusiveness and respect for human rights.

Progress on Signify’s Brighter Lives, Better World 2030 program will be reported on a quarterly basis, in line with the company’s financial results.

The Lighting Industry Association (The LIA) has officially launched the TM65.2 Assured Product and Company Schemes, providing the lighting sector with an evidence-based, independently verified framework for embodied carbon reporting of lighting products.

As sustainability expectations continue to increase across the built environment and infrastructure sectors, the need for transparency and credibility in carbon reporting also grows. The schemes have been developed to drive consistency in reporting, increase market credibility and confidence in assured products and companies, level the playing field and reduce greenwash potential.

Unlike self-declared claims, the schemes operate through a rigorous third-party assessment process delivered by The LIA Laboratory. Assessment includes product disassembly and detailed evaluation of components, materials and weights, assembly locations, energy consumption, and tonnage calculations of produced goods.

The LIA brings lighting-specific technical expertise to the verification process, ensuring assessments align precisely with the TM65.2 methodology and reflect real-world lighting design and manufacturing practices.

Ali Kay, Sustainability Manager at The LIA, commented: “The industry has made significant progress in understanding embodied carbon, but consistency and credibility are critical if reporting is to drive meaningful change. TM65.2 Assured provides an evidence-based, independently verified framework that supports transparency and reduces the risk of greenwashing. By applying a lighting-specific approach, we are ensuring that calculations are robust, comparable and aligned with the realities of our sector.”

Both will be delivered through The LIA Laboratory, which is ISO 17065 accredited, the internationally recognised standard that defines how certification bodies must operate to ensure impartiality, technical validity and globally accepted decision-making. The laboratory is also UKAS and IECEE accredited, reinforcing confidence in the certification process.

Kieran Merrills, Certification Manager at The LIA Laboratory, added: “Certification must be rigorous, impartial and technically sound. TM65.2 Assured has been built around structured third-party verification, detailed technical assessment and clear governance. Our ISO 17065 certification ensures that every decision is made objectively and consistently, giving the market confidence that assured products and companies have met a defined and independently validated standard.”

The TM65.2 Assured schemes offer manufacturers and organisations a clear route to market differentiation while strengthening trust across the supply chain. By combining technical depth, third-party oversight and lighting-sector expertise, The LIA aims to support the industry’s transition toward more transparent and accountable sustainability reporting.

White Light (WL) is proud to support City of London School as it advances its theatrical capabilities with a major investment in energy‑efficient ETC LED fixtures. The upgrade marks a significant step in the school’s ongoing commitment to creative excellence and sustainable practice.

Under the leadership of Drama Technician Joe Oliver, the school’s theatre has transitioned from ageing tungsten filament lanterns, many of which had reached the end of repairable life, to a modern, flexible LED system designed to enhance both learning and performance.

“We were in desperate need of upgrading our system, as our old lanterns were no longer repairable,” Joe explains. “Choosing ETC made perfect sense. The fixtures integrate instantly with our existing ETC GIO console, and they give us the tools to really elevate our shows.”

Working closely with WL’s Key Account Manager, Antony Vine, the school selected a range of ETC ColourSource fixtures to deliver full, even coverage across the stage and expand creative possibilities. The investment includes ETC ColourSource Spot V, ColourSource Spot Junior, ColourSource Fresnel V, ColourSource PAR Junior and ColourSource PAR V Zoom.

Joe comments: “This combination of fixtures provides the school with a versatile palette, supporting everything from intimate exam pieces to large‑scale musical productions.”

A distinctive aspect of City of London School’s drama programme is its student‑run technical team. Joe teaches students during lunchtime clubs, giving them hands‑on experience in lighting, sound, multimedia and stage management.

One of his biggest challenges is ensuring that every student has a meaningful role. “Sometimes it can be difficult to find a job for everybody,” he admits, “but I’d much rather have too many boys learning tech than not enough. They rise to every challenge.”

The new LED equipment is already transforming this learning environment. Students explored the system with “great delight,” quickly discovering the expanded colour range and creative flexibility now at their fingertips.

The school’s first production using the new rig was Little Shop of Horrors, which proved a roaring success. “The new colours available to us really helped enhance the show,” Joe says. “We’re still learning what we can achieve, but the possibilities seem endless.”

The moment the installation was complete remains one of Joe’s highlights: “Switching it all on for the first time and lighting the stage with a blaze of colour was fantastic.”

Joe has worked with WL for many years and credits the company’s technical guidance as pivotal to the success of the upgrade. “Antony Vine has been instrumental in helping choose the best selection of lanterns for our theatre,” he says. “There’s more to come, and I’m looking forward to working with Antony again very soon.”

Antony comments: “We are delighted to continue supporting City of London School as it evolves its theatre infrastructure, providing sustainable, future‑proofed solutions that empower creativity and nurture the next generation of technical talent.”
