Glenn assumes this position in ECA’s historic 125th anniversary year, following a year serving as Senior Vice President.

Having worked in the electrical industry since 1980, Glenn has been an active member of ECA’s East Region for over 25 years. During this time, he has held positions as Bedfordshire & Hertfordshire Branch Chair and East Regional Chair. He is currently on his second 6-year term as an East Region Council Member.

Glenn began his career in electrical wholesaling before moving to Gent in 1984, a fire detection and suppression systems design and installation organisation. He later went on to manage UK operations at Cerberus (now part of Siemens) before starting and running Wagner, aspirating smoke detection and fire suppression specialist. In 2001, he left Wagner to establish and run his own fire and security business. Following the sale of that business in 2018, he joined Drax360, where he remains today.

Originally from East London and now living near Cambridge, during his career he has gained a Higher National Certificate (HNC) in Business Studies, completed the first year of an Ordinary National Certificate (ONC) in Electrical Engineering and has achieved Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) qualifications.

Commenting on his appointment, Glenn said:

“I am honoured to take on the role of ECA President, particularly during this landmark anniversary year. Throughout this year I look forward to continuing to represent ECA as we support the advancements in our industry, driving electrification, tackling the skills shortage and creating a fairer business landscape.

“I am passionate about the people in our industry and a key priority for me this year will be developing the skills of the next generation of talent. Promoting ECA’s Growth Hub, an initiative I have been closely involved with in its development and delivery, will be central to this work.”

Andrew Eldred, Managing Director at ECA, said:

“Glenn’s longstanding involvement with ECA is a great preparation for his success as President over the next year. Glenn’s experience and commitment will prove a great asset as we continue our work to help ECA Members build strong businesses and a resilient industry, at a pivotal time.”

At today’s ECA Council meeting, Andy Prager, Managing Director of ECA South East Member business, Paine Manwaring based in Worthing has been appointed as Vice President of ECA.

Jeremy Parkin has been made Senior Vice President, and Ruth Devine MBE becomes Immediate Past President.

Peter Heath is stepping away from his role as managing director of the Professional Lighting and Sound Association (PLASA) to enjoy a well-earned retirement. He will remain in the position while a replacement is found and intends to continue to represent the Association through the #WeMakeEvents campaign and in a consultancy capacity post-retirement.

Since joining in 2016, Peter has helped transform PLASA’s industry perception – making it more approachable and collaborative while strengthening its financial position, supported by staff, the managing governing body (MGB), and the executive team.

Over the past decade at MD, Peter has overseen a number of significant developments for the Association, including the successful relocation of the PLASA Show from Excel London to Olympia. He also guided the organisation through the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, during which he played an active role in championing the industry and supporting the #WeMakeEvents campaign.

Alongside his work with PLASA, Peter has contributed to the wider industry as a trustee of Backup Tech and is a regular participant in events such as BikeFest, activities he plans to continue.

In a career that spans over 35 years, prior to his time with PLASA, Peter was a well-known senior figure at Roland Corporation, where he ultimately became head of pro AV for Europe.

Reflecting on his time at PLASA, Peter comments: “Heading up PLASA has been a real privilege and a challenge. On the outside PLASA seems uncomplicated, however in reality it’s a very diverse business covering many areas within the industry and requiring a really strong team to make it work. The current PLASA team does that in spades. I’ve always focused on working together and expanding our reach and collaborative efforts – this is needed now more than ever if we are to achieve adequate understanding and recognition from governments.

I recognise that all journeys must end and mine is no exception. I’ve really enjoyed learning and shaping the business. Our members are absolutely core to everything PLASA does and they are an amazing diverse group that make all the effort absolutely worthwhile.”

Matt Lloyd, Chair of the PLASA board, adds: “I would like to take this opportunity to thank Peter for his energy, dedication and humility during his time as MD of PLASA. I was already on the board when Peter was appointed at what was a very tough time for PLASA – both from a reputation and financial standpoint; we really were against the ropes. It is fair to say that Peter embraced that challenge head-on, in the determined way that is so characteristic of him.”

He continues: “Around 2018, we joked about needing to wear hard hats when speaking to people in the industry in case they wanted to throw something at us! Peter has since developed and led the team to where we are today – the best financial health PLASA has ever been in, allowing us to do a record amount of work across the industry in supporting it. I hope Peter can look at what we have achieved and feel enormous pride in how he nurtured PLASA back to health, supported by an amazing team and board. We wish him all the very best in his next chapter, whatever that may bring.”

Peter concludes: “The bonds and relationships formed during my tenure will stay with me for the rest of my life and I look forward to staying connected where possible. Thank you to the staff, the executive board and the MGB, the members, other associations and all those who supported my efforts. It’s been a really great decade.”

Alongside consultancy and Backup Tech involvement, Peter plans to spend retirement “playing more music, playing more golf, and enjoying more time with family and grandchildren”.

White Light (WL) today announces the retirement of Technical Director Dave Isherwood, marking the culmination of a remarkable 37‑year career that has helped define the company’s technical direction, culture and operational excellence.

Dave’s connection with White Light began even before his full‑time start in 1989. His earliest memories take him back to Filmer Road, spending a summer coiling cables in “The Cage”. His first weeks on staff involved preparing colour for PAR64 semaphore changers and repainting brand‑new Rainbow scrollers for M. Butterfly, a task that had to be repeated when the colour choice changed. These moments captured the improvisational, collaborative spirit of WL at the time.

Although the role initially began as a temporary stop while he considered his future, Dave quickly found himself part of a close and highly motivated team. The people, the energy and the opportunity for continuous learning kept him at WL for more than three decades. He recalls: “In 1989, WL had fewer than 30 employees, embodying a work‑hard, play‑hard environment that grew more sophisticated as WL and the wider industry matured. Yet the ethos that made WL unique has remained intact thanks to long‑standing team members who helped carry that spirit forward.”

As the industry and company evolved, so did Dave’s responsibilities. Over time he moved from hands‑on engineering to strategic leadership, becoming as comfortable with spreadsheets as with screwdrivers, even if a pair of safety boots always stayed under his desk. His career path was shaped partly by opportunity and partly by curiosity; asking questions often led him to take on new responsibilities and strengthen WL’s technical framework. One of the defining chapters of his career came with the launch of The Moving Light Company, where he played a pivotal role in developing a new division during a period of rapid technological change. Later, he took on wider stewardship as a Company Director and as part of the 2007 Management Buyout team, transitions he describes as natural progressions that aligned with the business’s growth.

Across his tenure, Dave witnessed significant technological shifts, from the introduction of DMX to the adoption of scrollers, automated fixtures and LED sources. He recalls building countless “bodge boxes” during the early transition from analogue to digital systems, ensuring designers and technicians could embrace emerging technologies with confidence. Through these changes, he emphasised that innovation was not only about the latest equipment but also about supporting designers’ creative visions and integrating new tools into workflows in reliable, user‑focused ways.

He comments: “WL’s ability to adapt to new technologies has often depended on understanding the user perspective, collaborating with manufacturers and refining operations behind the scenes.” Dave highlights battery‑powered fixtures as an example; while they transformed event delivery, their effective use required robust processes for returning, charging and testing equipment. For him, backstage reliability is just as critical as on‑site performance, and WL’s commitment to operational excellence has been central to its reputation.

Reflecting on the many productions and milestones he contributed to, Dave finds it difficult to single out specific shows, noting instead that WL’s achievements are always the result of a collective effort. His greatest pride lies in the development of the people around him, watching colleagues grow in ability and confidence, both within and beyond the company. A keen mentor, he reminds younger technicians that “every day is a school day”, encouraging them to ask questions, stay curious and learn from challenges as much as successes.

As he considers his legacy, Dave returns to the guiding principles set out by WL founder John Simpson. Dave comments: “John believed in giving customers choice and doing the job well. As the company expanded, these principles were codified in WL’s Core Values and further reflected in the company’s B‑Corp recognition in 2023, which acknowledges its broader commitment to people and planet.” Dave believes this ethos remains integral to the future of WL and will continue to guide the next generation of technicians and leaders.

Craig Bennett, WL General Manager comments: “As Dave steps into retirement, he leaves behind a company strengthened by his vision, technical expertise and collaborative leadership. His influence can be seen in the teams he developed, the systems he improved and the culture he helped build. White Light extends its deepest thanks to Dave for his outstanding contribution and wishes him every success in the next chapter.”

At the Annual Lighting Lunch held on Monday 15th December, the Association for Lighting Production and Design (The ALPD) awarded three new Fellowships to Gerry Amies, Michael Hulls and Sarah Rushton-Read.

Fellowship of the ALPD is awarded to someone who, in the opinion of the Executive have rendered signal service to the technical aspects of the art of lighting.

GERRY AMIES Started theatre work at Theatre Royal Norwich in the early 70s before moving to the opera world, working for Glyndebourne Festival Opera, Kent Opera and English National Opera. Since that time he has worked on a huge variety of shows in the West End and elsewhere, including La Cage Aux Folles at the London Palladium, Beauty and The Beast (Dominion), Jesus Christ Superstar (Lyceum Theatre), Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Lord of the Rings (Theatre Royal Drury Lane), War Horse) (Gillian Lynne – UK Tour – World Tour) Crazy for You (Gillian Lynne).

MICHAEL HULLS Michael trained in Dance and Theatre at Dartington College of Arts and by accident became a lighting designer who has worked exclusively in the dance world for the past 35 years. He is perhaps best known for his long term collaborations with leading choreographers such as Russell Maliphant, and Akram Khan sharing four Olivier awards for Best New Dance Production with them.

He was the recipient of the 2014 Olivier Award for Outstanding Achievement in Dance and Knight of Illumination Awards in 2009 and 2016. Michael is an associate artist of Sadler’s Wells Theatre where in 2016 he created the memorable LightSpace installation at the Wells, the first presentation on the main stage without dancers or performers.

In 2023 he was awarded an OBE for services to Dance and the Arts. He is an Honorary Fellow of Rose Bruford College where he is a visiting professional on the Light in Performance MA course. He is now enjoying retirement in Hastings with his partner and their dogs.

SARAH RUSHTON-READ started out as an actress before moving to stage management. Noticing the better-paid roles were in the male-dominated tech departments, she went back to college for an HND in electronic engineering, secured a placement at the Royal Opera House, and found herself firmly ‘doing’ lighting.

Two years later she was teaching at Guildhall, then to Glyndebourne, where she became Deputy Lighting Manager and designed for touring productions.

She moved into production management with PRG, co-founded an event lighting company, and after 9/11 forced another rethink, shifted into journalism as Deputy Editor of Lighting & Sound International. From there she built a PR firm, embarked on Masters degrees in PR and then in Energy & Environment, and began championing sustainability long before it became fashionable.

Her mission in press and PR has always been to make backstage work visible: through trade press, brand strategy, awards, and by naming the issues usually left smouldering in the wings. That led to founding Eco Theatre, co-founding Women in Stage Entertainment with Paule Constable, and helping grow the Knight of Illumination Awards into a major international celebration of design. She says of her career:

“I was, more often than not, the first woman in the room — something that taught me how to hold space, open firmly closed doors, and leave them ajar for the next under represented person coming through.”

The ALPD would like to thank Paul de Ville of Goboplus for sponsorship of the Awards presented.

White Light is delighted to honour the achievements of former Managing Director Bryan Raven, whose dedication to theatre, sustainability, and industry development has left a lasting impact. Though surprised by the recognition, Bryan has been deeply moved by the response, receiving hundreds of heartfelt messages from colleagues and peers acknowledging his leadership, reliability, and unwavering commitment to the industry.

Throughout his career, Bryan has been instrumental in driving industry-wide initiatives. He played a key role in White Light’s long-standing sponsorship of TheatreCraft, ensuring that aspiring off-stage theatre professionals have access to valuable career support. Reflecting on his involvement, Bryan recalls: “I was introduced to TheatreCraft over a decade ago through personal relationship and their mission resonated with me. It is such a vital event for our industry as it allows the next generation a much-needed insight into the various resources available and the paths they may be able to take. It’s all about encouraging and making sure everything is completely accessible – hence the importance supporting them through sponsoring. One of my proudest achievements is to see that TheatreCraft has become an integral part of White Light’s annual calendar, championed internally by various team members.” Bryan’s commitment extended to helping with the development of TheatreCraft Next Generation, dedicated to 7-15 years old, held at the Science Museum in London in 2024.

Bryan has also been a driving force in nurturing new talent within the industry. His involvement in Skillscene since 2012 and his position as one of the founding directors of the National College Creative Industries (NCCI) led to the creation of White Light’s award-winning apprenticeship scheme, which has provided over 75 young people with a Creative Venue Technician apprenticeship since its inception in 2011. His advocacy work in government lobbying has ensured that technical theatre careers remain firmly on the agenda.

For over 15 years, Bryan has championed sustainability in the performing arts. He recalls: “In 2008, I collaborated with Julie’s Bicycle on the Greening London’s Theatres guide, a practical guide for the industry launched by the then Mayor of London, Ken Livingstone. It outlined how London theatres could cut carbon emissions and implement greener practices.” From his early involvement in the Green in London Theatre campaign to his recent work with the Theatre Green Book, Bryan has consistently pushed for environmental responsibility. His collaborations with sustainability leaders such as Julie’s Bicycle, Paule Constable (Lighting Designer), Paul Handley (Head of Production at the National Theatre), Juliet Hayes (Risk & Sustainability Manager at SOLT) to name but a few, highlight his unwavering commitment. Under his leadership, White Light achieved ISO14001 accreditation in 2022—an international standard for environmental management systems—followed by B Corp certification just months later.

Bryan reflects: “We were introduced to B Corp while working towards ISO14001, and we soon realised our existing practices aligned perfectly. It wasn’t about changing our approach but formalising it. B Corp’s mission resonated with us—to grow a profitable, sustainable business with a global reputation for excellence. This wasn’t a short-term sustainability initiative but a long-term commitment to accountability and responsible business practices.”

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Bryan played a pivotal role in the #WeMakeEvents campaign, advocating for the live events sector at a time of crisis. His efforts in lobbying MPs at the House of Commons helped bring the industry’s challenges to the forefront of government discussions.

Throughout his time at White Light, Bryan was supported by colleagues who enabled him to focus on these vital issues and help shape a better industry. He laughs: “Of course, not every idea of mine was a winner!”

Bryan’s legacy is deeply rooted in White Light’s values, inspired by founder John Simpson’s ethos of ‘doing the right thing.’ The company remains committed to integrity, innovation, and industry support. White

Light’s Technical Director Dave Isherwood comments: “We are proud to see this carried forward by our team, from Stuart Porter’s work with the ALPD to Jonathan Haynes’ advocacy for the Save the Beck Theatre campaign, and Liz Thompson and Sandra Tyler’s leadership of our apprenticeship programme, among many others. As we look to the future and the next generation of leaders, we remain dedicated to upholding these values. We are also pleased to announce Craig Bennett as our new General Manager, reinforcing our commitment to being the industry’s ‘Partner of Choice.’ Bryan’s contributions to White Light – and the wider industry – are truly invaluable, and we couldn’t be prouder of all he has contributed, continues to achieve, and the invaluable lessons he has shared with us.”

When asked what advice Bryan would offer to those looking to make a similar impact, he shares: “In today’s climate, making an impact is more challenging due to macroeconomic and geopolitical factors.

However, it is now more critical than ever to pursue a responsible business strategy. The next generation of leaders recognises this, which gives me hope. Demonstrating the business case for sustainability and responsibility to external stakeholders is key to fostering a long-term, ethical approach. It will also help attract future talent, as young professionals increasingly seek to work for organisations that align with their values.”

Even as he embarks on new ventures, Bryan remains deeply connected to the industry. His upcoming projects include presenting a climate change paper at Showlight in Dijon (19th – 22nd May), continuing his engagement with the Power of Events to inspire young talent, and working with Theatre Green Book to address embedded carbon in technical products.

Global manufacturer of emergency lighting technology and systems Mackwell has appointed David Lang-Smith as Sales and Marketing Director across UK & Europe.

Having worked in the lighting sector for 15 years, predominantly as a Sales Director across EMEA, David has extensive experience that will undoubtedly benefit Mackwell. With a specialist background in architectural lighting, David understands the breadth of the lighting sector and what is required to drive forward successful partnerships that benefit all parties.

David has risen through the industry at a rapid pace, clearly developing his skills and expertise which allowed him to quickly move into director level positions. His demonstrative growth and commitment to learning and self-motivation will be important in his new role for Mackwell.

As well as bringing clear transferable skills, David has a rich working knowledge of the industry that will help Mackwell in their continued growth in the lighting landscape. David’s previous position included being a Sales Director for a start-up company co-founded by Shuji Nakamura, the inventor of the blue LED. David accompanied Shiju when he received his Nobel Prize, which was a notable career moment for David.

In the UK, David was part of the project team involved in upgrading the lighting at Bluewater Shopping Centre, transitioning from old lighting technology to LEDs. He was able to visit the centre six years later and see that the lights were still performing beautifully.

Speaking of his appointment, Rene Joppi Managing Director at Mackwell said: “David has already proven that he has a can-do attitude, strong leadership and great people skills. These work in harmony with his resilience, adaptability and commitment to teamwork. We know he will be a great addition to Mackwell, driving forward innovative ways of working and helping to significantly raise awareness of our business. We’re delighted to have him as part of the team.”

David added: “I’m already enjoying the opportunity to help develop and enhance the commercial structure for Mackwell’s future growth plans. As Sales and Marketing Director for the UK and Europe, I get to collaborate with diverse teams, drive marketing campaigns, and directly influence the growth and success of our company. This dynamic environment keeps me constantly challenged and engaged, making my work incredibly rewarding.”

Mackwell provides quality emergency lighting products alongside seamless integration of their systems and solutions into each and every project. Mackwell also offers short lead times and full stock at all times, which is reassuring for clients who need to work at speed or on tighter turnarounds.

The 29th year of the prestigious SLL Young Lighter competition provided a high-profile opportunity for the four selected finalists to present their research at the popular UK lighting exhibition LiGHT 23 in November 2023. Anna Freiesleben, Project Lighting Designer at Michael Grubb Studio, shares insights into the process and inspiration behind her enlightening talk.

Anna proudly presented her topic Light Beyond Earth: Illuminating Life on Exoplanets. Her research explores how exoplanets set the scene for discovering unusual lighting effects and consequent challenges to the human circadian rhythm. This study proposes the creation of a futuristic ‘Exoplanet Lighting Design Guide’, initially focusing on the closest exoplanet to Earth: Proxima Centauri b.

Anna shares her inspiration behind this unique topic. She explains: “In summer 2022, the first images from the James Webb telescope were released, which showed aspects of space in super high definition, featuring glistening stars and an array of ethereal colours. This photographic publication was the catalyst for me to research light in space and I started looking deeper into astronomy imagery.

As lighting effects depend on the relationship between planets and their stars, this led me to look at the appearance of light on various exoplanets. In early 2023, I decided to submit a proposal for the Young Lighter competition and refined the study to focus upon the closest exoplanet to Earth: Proxima Centauri b.”

She also reveals how she began researching such a new and unexplored topic. When asked about her starting point, she explains: “I read articles, watched documentaries, listened to podcasts, and delved through the NASA website, which is full of helpful information and provides the latest research. I found information specific to Proxima Centauri b, and filtered out the aspects related to light. I considered how humans would live on the exoplanet and the unique challenges and opportunities of both natural and artificial lighting. Throughout each competition stage, I considered how the information could be presented through a strong visual image, drawing diagrams, maps and concept imagery to communicate the information in a clear and appealing way.”

There were several points of interest discovered while researching this topic. Anna explains: “I found it surprising how similar the characteristics of Proxima Centauri b are to Earth. Where the two planets differ, the extreme conditions are fascinating. The exoplanet’s special feature of perpetual sunset was the key characteristic which acted as a visual backdrop throughout my narrative. As no one has yet travelled to Proxima Centauri b, there are many aspects of life there which are still unknown. Setting my presentation in the future (2100) enabled me to create a pretext using the most likely scenarios, giving a basis to the guide and parameters for the light studies.”

To structure her topic, Anna informs us of the key points she wanted to convey: “Due to the visual appeal of space, I knew I wanted my research to convey an illustrated story. I used the three chapters of 1. Climate Catastrophe; 2. Light Beyond Earth; and 3. Illuminating Life on Exoplanets to narrate the journey from Earth to Proxima Centauri b. This structure linked back to current Earth climate research to provide justification for the guide, conveying the distinctive exoplanetary lighting conditions and providing bespoke lighting guidance. Whilst designing for life on Proxima Centauri b, I considered the three ecologies of mental, social and environmental. Through my presentation, I wanted to evoke interest in space and the concept of light beyond Earth. I hoped to encourage new ways of thinking about light and how to design for unusual contexts, pushing the boundaries of standard lighting design to prepare us for the future.”

Discussing what we can expect from the future of this topic, she said: “As a future Exoplanet Lighting Design Guide would require input from designers across the world, I would like to discuss the topic amongst international audiences. It would be great to collaborate with astrophysicists and bridge the gap between science and the arts, as a future in space will affect us all. As we learn more about exoplanets, the Exoplanet Lighting Design Guide can constantly expand to contain the latest scientific research. There are thought to be 59 potentially habitable exoplanets amongst an estimated total of 11 billion, so the opportunities for discovering and responding to unusual lighting effects are endless.”

Anna’s presentation ultimately looks to answer the question: What are the future lighting conditions humans may face, and how do we design for these unfamiliar contexts? Her illuminating research is relevant for the future of lighting and design and raises thought-provoking questions about light and space.
