Glamox will supply lighting for four Offshore Energy Support Vessels (OESVs) being built for Sea1 Offshore AS, a worldwide vessel provider serving the offshore oil, gas, and renewable industries. Glamox will supply a total of 8,000 marine lights for the exteriors and interiors of four vessels that will be used to support offshore energy installations.

OESVs are specialised vessels that deliver logistics, transport, installation, maintenance, and operational support to offshore energy infrastructure – including offshore wind farms, oil and gas platforms, subsea installations, and power and communications cables.

“These vessels are built to exceptionally high specifications and are frequently required to perform in some of the harshest weather conditions at sea. That places strict demands on every component on board — including the lighting. The energy-efficient lighting complements the environmental benefits of these methanol-ready vessels, which also have generators capable of running on 100% biofuel,” said Bernt Omdal, CEO of Sea1 Offshore.

Glamox will supply approximately 2,000 marine LED lights per vessel. They include rugged exterior lighting, including watertight explosion-proof luminaires and floodlights. Interior lighting includes multipurpose luminaires for workshops, stores, holds, and passageways, recessed lighting for indoor crew areas, and downlights for crew quarters.

“Our marine-certified luminaires are highly energy efficient and have a long lifespan, supporting our customers’ ambition to cut emissions, reduce maintenance needs, and lower total operational costs,” said Astrid Simonsen Joos, Group CEO of Glamox. “This project represents another strong milestone for our marine business.”

Glamox will deliver the lighting for the first vessel to COSCO Shipping (Qidong) Offshore Co. Ltd in April. COSCO, which is Glamox’s customer, is building all four vessels and will install the lighting at its yard. The lighting for the next three vessels will be supplied every three months thereafter.

Sea1 Offshore’s OESVs are based on the ST-245 design. The first two vessels were ordered in November 2024, and a further two in March 2025. They measure 120 metres in length, with a cargo deck of 1,400 square meters, and each will be fitted with a 250-tonne deck crane, two remotely operated vehicle (ROV) hangars, and a moonpool. They can accommodate up to 120 personnel. All four vessels are scheduled for delivery during 2027 and the first half of 2028.

TRILUX has completed a comprehensive outdoor lighting modernisation project at the Polytechnic University of Bucharest, supporting safer movement across one of Romania’s largest and most established university campuses. The project forms part of the university’s wider efforts to improve visibility after dark, enhance user comfort and create a safer outdoor environment for students, staff and visitors.

The upgrade focused on replacing the existing outdoor lighting with a modern, energy-efficient solution designed to support student wellbeing, improve visibility after dark and reduce long-term energy consumption. TRILUX worked closely with the university team to deliver a solution tailored to the scale and operational needs of the campus.

Energy-efficient lighting designed around people and place

A combination of TRILUX outdoor luminaires was used across the site, including Jovie (mounted on columns), Constela, 9821 and 8841. Together, these solutions deliver uniform illumination, high visual comfort and improved efficiency, while meeting relevant lighting standards and durability requirements for a busy university environment.

The new lighting supports safer movement across the campus after dark, enhances the quality of shared outdoor spaces and contributes to lower energy use compared with the previous installation.

A trusted partner for complex education projects

The Polytechnic University of Bucharest selected TRILUX based on its experience in education and infrastructure projects, as well as its ability to provide support throughout the full project lifecycle. This included early-stage concept development, lighting design, technical coordination during the tender phase, and the delivery and installation of the luminaires

The university had also previously worked with TRILUX on other projects, giving confidence in the proposed approach and the performance of the solutions.

Careful coordination and collaborative delivery

One of the key challenges of the project was coordinating the lighting installation alongside other infrastructure and construction works taking place across the campus. This required detailed planning and close collaboration between all parties involved, including the Chorus Research Engineering design office and the university’s internal project team.

From initial analysis of user needs through to detailed lighting design and on-site delivery, the project progressed smoothly despite tight timelines. Clear communication and a transparent design process helped ensure the final solution met both technical and operational expectations.

Improved safety, efficiency and user experience

The upgraded lighting has delivered clear improvements in safety, visual comfort and overall usability of the campus outdoor areas. Energy consumption has been significantly reduced, while students and staff now benefit from consistent, well-controlled lighting across key routes and public spaces.

The project demonstrates how considered outdoor lighting design can support sustainability targets while also enhancing the everyday experience of campus users.

A school in Market Bosworth, rural Leicestershire, has been equipped with special outdoor wall lighting designed to preserve dark skies for multiple species of local bats and other nocturnal animals. Glamox is providing energy-efficient LED wall lights, specifically designed to minimise light spillage and approved by DarkSky International, a non-profit organisation that aims to restore the nighttime environment and protect communities and wildlife from light pollution.

Hinckley House School is an independent day school designed specifically for students with special educational needs. It serves children aged 5 to 11 with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs, alongside a range of other associated conditions.

The school is housed in a Grade II-listed Old Rectory within a conservation area. During its renovation, careful effort was made to preserve and enhance its historic character while protecting local wildlife.

“In 2018, a bat detection study identified five distinct bat species and indicated a thriving bat community with a variety of roosting and foraging sites,” said Jake Smith, Senior Electrical Engineer at Crookes Walter Consulting, the electrical design consultant on the Hinckley House School renovation project. “For lighting the school perimeter, we specified lighting that was durable, energy efficient, and which would provide sufficient illumination for the safety of pupils and staff whilst minimising light spillage that could affect nocturnal species. Our goal was to preserve the nighttime environment as best we could.”

Glamox provided the DarkSky-approved version of its O21-W wall light for lighting the perimeter of the school building. The tough luminaire emits light only where it is needed – in a downward direction – minimising light spill into the night sky.

“Artificial light can adversely affect wildlife and plants, interfering with their perception of day and night and disrupting their natural behaviour. The lighting for this project has a warm colour temperature of 3000 K and uses special optics to restrict light spillage,” said David Hunt, Managing Director of Glamox’s business in the United Kingdom & Ireland.

“The wall light also supports a circular economy, which is the opposite of a throwaway society. It’s been designed to be disassembled, enabling parts to be replaced to extend its lifespan. Additionally, parts can be reused or recycled at the end of their life. Around 45 per cent of the wall light’s housing is made from recycled aluminium,” added Hunt.

The wall lights are manufactured by Glamox in Basingstoke, Hampshire, in the United Kingdom, and exported across Europe. Glamox’s customer for the project is Crookes Walker Consulting, which provides sustainable mechanical, electrical, and plumbing design and professional services to property and construction industries. Simcott Projects Ltd undertook the lighting installation.

The Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) are globally renowned as centres of excellence, while leading private institutions such as Dayananda Sagar University in Karnataka contribute to the growth of India’s educational landscape.

To complement the natural facade of these expansive campuses, K-LITE was entrusted with illuminating landscapes, walkways, pathways, and primary roads across four locations: IIT Powai in Mumbai, IIT Indore in Madhya Pradesh, IIT Hyderabad in Telangana, and Dayananda Sagar University in Bangalore. The design objective in each case was to create safe, inviting, and visually appealing outdoor spaces while enhancing functionality after dark.

The involvement of K-LITE came through close collaboration with governing bodies, trusts, architects, MEP consultants, and project management consultants, who all played a central role in decision-making. By conducting product demonstrations, preparing mock-ups, and working hand in hand with contractors at each site, K-LITE were able to provide tailored lighting solutions that aligned with the architectural and landscape design of each campus.

At IIT Powai, K-LITE installed the Brussel Pole, Carley Square Column, and Carley Square Bollard, creating elegant illumination along pathways and open spaces. Dayananda Sagar University was enhanced with the Magudam, Causeway Midi, and the American Swan Series in six-metre single and double arm variations. At IIT Indore, the Bishop Lighting Post, Ani Post Top, Sudo Pathfinders, Vajra Bollard, Trioscape Accent Lights, and Gadai were integrated into the campus landscape, accentuating both the natural and built environments. IIT Hyderabad, meanwhile, benefitted from the installation of the K-LITE Juno paired with K-LITE circular poles, offering refined and functional pathway illumination.

Through these projects, K-LITE has elevated the atmosphere of some of India’s most prominent professional educational institutions. The installations not only improve safety and usability but also enhance the visual experience of the campuses. By providing durable, energy-efficient, and aesthetically distinctive lighting solutions, K-LITE continue to play an important role in shaping educational spaces that inspire and support future generations.

A recent project with Stadtwerke Heidenheim AG – Unternehmensgruppe has shown how quick and straightforward it can be to modernise car park lighting using TRILUX LiveLink SwarmSens. In the underground car park beneath the Congress Centrum, outdated 58W fluorescent luminaires were replaced with an energy-efficient LED solution.

TRILUX recommended a 1:1 replacement with Aragon Fit luminaires and LiveLink SwarmSens – and the Stadtwerke team approved the solution. The entire refurbishment was then handed over to apprentice electricians as a real-world learning project, thanks to the ease of installation.

Lighting management for all

LiveLink SwarmSens is designed for simple retrofits in car parks and stairwells with up to 4,069 light points. All daylight and presence sensors are built into the luminaires, with configuration via the SwarmSens app. Basic programming can also be done directly on the controller where app access is not ideal.

“Thanks to the simple configuration and commissioning, smart lighting can be implemented with minimal effort, even in cost-sensitive projects,” explains Thomas Roberts, Solution Manager Light Management TRILUX.

Hands-on learning

As there was no time pressure, apprentices refurbished the 450 luminaires during regular operations. After training at TRILUX HQ in Arnsberg, they were fully equipped for the job.

“The installation was relatively simple. After the power supply to the old lights was switched off, we simply removed and dismantled them. We fitted the adapters supplied by TRILUX for the new luminaires without any problems. The wireless connectivity between fittings made a huge difference, and the programming was quick and intuitive,” says Mihály, apprentice electronics technician at Stadtwerke Heidenheim AG – Unternehmensgruppe.

An excellent result

Energy consumption has been cut by 85 percent, and the new Aragon Fit luminaires create a brighter, more welcoming environment. Their translucent diffuser and wide-beam optics produce a soft ceiling glow that reduces the typical “cave effect” found in underground car parks.

“The new installation offers a much higher level of brightness. In addition, the partial lighting approach is not only visually appealing, it also avoids unnecessary energy use by preventing the entire space being lit at once,” adds Aaron Czogalla, Team Leader Technical Maintenance Management/General Construction and Refurbishment at Stadtwerke Heidenheim AG – Unternehmensgruppe.

From improved lighting quality to hands-on skills development, the project highlights the practical benefits of TRILUX LiveLink SwarmSens and the ease of delivering energy-efficient, modern lighting for car parks.

On 9th November 2024, a switch on of the new lighting design by Speirs Major Light Architecture by Queen Maxima of the Netherlands marked the end of a five-year restoration of the Dom Tower in Utrecht.

The new permanent illumination by SMLA is an evolution of their award-winning 2013 light art installation, transforming the tower’s image from a solid daytime landmark into a vibrant, open beacon after dark.

Each level ascended grows progressively lighter and more transparent, celebrating the tower’s Gothic heritage, while added flexibility enhances its role as a community symbol.

Through careful design and consideration for sustainability and environmental impact, the updated lighting ensures the Dom Tower remains an engaging part of Utrecht’s skyline, bridging its historic past to a luminous future.

In 2013, SMLA were commissioned to develop an art installation for the iconic 14th Century 112m high Dom Tower as part of the city’s light-based art trial, Trajectum Lumen. The commission saw the Tower come to life as a living monument, appearing to ‘breathe’ and communicate through light with Utrecht. The installation opened to commemorate the 300-year anniversary of the signing of the Treaty of Utrecht peace accord, winning several awards. It remained in place for five years until the start of Tower renovation works in 2019.

In 2022 Utrecht’s city council agreed to re-instate a new lighting scheme, offering SMLA the unique opportunity to reimagine and evolve their work into a permanent design. The new brief extended the scope beyond an art installation into a broader set of interests from community stakeholders, A mirror group that included Utrecht’s mayor and other city representatives, heritage specialists and architects, residents and citizens was formed to feed into the design process.

SMLA Senior Partner and CEO Keith Bradshaw elaborates, “We listened very carefully to the mirror group, as we wanted our design to reflect their passion for the history and architectural significance of the Tower, its importance within the fabric of the city, and to make a meaningful contribution to the contemporary life of Utretcht’s citizens.

We created a concept that lights the Tower from within, bringing out the building’s three-dimensional qualities. This internal light also plays up the building’s architectural richness at night, revealing key Gothic architectural details usually obscured by shadows in natural light. The Gothic aspiration to reach for the sky is reflected in the illumination of the vaulted ceilings, and in the way the lantern structure at the top is illuminated on the outside as well as the inside, so that it appears more transparent and lighter.

The new design also celebrates the unique stained-glass windows in the Chapels. During the day, the colours of these windows are imperceptible from the outside. Now, backlighting reveals their vibrant colours when looking towards the Tower from Dom Square or the ‘Servetstraat’ after dark. This detail remains lit for one hour after the main lights are switched off at 11 pm, which allows the windows to become the centre of attention for a brief period each day.

We deliberately left the base of the Tower unilluminated other than the underpass to create a solid base above which the more intricately detailed upper layers appear to float.”

One prominent point from the community feedback was the desire to explore how the lighting could allow the Tower to take a more active role in the community.

Keith continues: “It became very clear to us that the people would like to see the Tower engaging more with the current world as a living part of the city’s narrative. We suggested including the facility to change the colours on a select number of days in the year to celebrate special events and occasions. The council decided that the days and events would be agreed upon by vote to ensure that these truly reflect the diverse cultural tapestry of Utrecht.”

With all the lighting including the built-in facility for colour change, it is possible to create almost any scene across the faces of Tower. The Netherlands national flag and the Utrecht flag were shown, among other designs, during the switch-on ceremony.

Achieving the aims of the lighting brief has been carefully balanced with responsibilities to the environment, ecology, and neighbours.

Associate Partner Benz Roos explains: “We kept light levels and energy use as low as possible without losing impact, selecting more ecologically friendly warm light sources, and reducing the amount of light spill into the sky through design, fixture placement, optical technology, and timed controls.

We also re-used as much of the product from the 2013 installation as possible for sustainability reasons. This involved a considerable effort in sorting, cleaning, and upgrading the light sources of the equipment to be suited to the new scheme, as well as reconfiguring the installation method to suit the new, permanent installation.”

Since switching on, the new flexible lighting of this beloved tower has been well received by locals and visitors alike.

Keith concludes: “It is a rare honour to be able to work on a heritage projects, but it is unique to work with the community of the city to use light as a metaphor and communication tool within the context of an historic monument. This feels like a new kind of project, where sensitive yet progressive lighting techniques have created a bridge between the past and the future.”

Kingston Grammar School, an independent school located in Kingston Upon Thames, South-West London, boasts a rich heritage dating back to the 13th century. Many of the school’s facilities are housed in historic buildings.

The school recently upgraded its outdated exterior and emergency lighting systems, opting for a modern, efficient, and sustainable lighting solution. The project involved replacing metal halide fixtures with RGBW LED uplights and wall lights, alongside the introduction of wireless controls. Fluorescent lights were also retrofitted in key areas, such as the Art Block and Main Hall.

Lighting firm Silent Design was appointed to deliver the project and partnered with connectivity experts Tridonic. Having previously collaborated on several successful projects, the Silent Design team was confident that Tridonic could handle the wireless control components of the upgraded lighting system.

The project also included a comprehensive emergency lighting upgrade, featuring central monitoring and reporting across three buildings via the school’s IT infrastructure. By partnering with Tridonic, Silent Design was able to provide a holistic lighting solution tailored to the diverse needs of Kingston Grammar School—combining emergency lighting, retrofit upgrades, and exterior lighting systems.

Replacing older lighting systems in heritage educational buildings presents unique challenges. Together, Silent Design, Tridonic, and the project’s electrical contractor, Redlands Electrical, delivered an innovative lighting solution that overcame these obstacles. The system integrates seamlessly into the existing infrastructure while meeting modern lighting and safety standards. Wireless controls were implemented to avoid extensive rewiring, and prototype testing ensured that the final design met the school’s requirements.

For the emergency lighting upgrade, Tridonic supplied sceneCOM evo to create a central DALI emergency monitoring and reporting system, seamlessly integrated with the school’s IT infrastructure. EM R2A PRO emergency lights, in recessed, surface, and bulkhead formats, were equipped with basicDIM Wireless G2 wireless modules to ensure effective control and communication across the wireless network, supported by basicDIM Wireless Passive Modules for enhanced connectivity.

In the retrofit upgrade, Tridonic delivered ADV6 LEDs paired with NFC PRE3 LED Drivers, offering efficient lighting performance and flexibility.
