The odds stack in Sylvania’s favour

A range of Sylvania’s innovative LEDs have been used in a re-lamping project at Rendezvous Casino in Brighton. The new high performing lighting scheme offers the casino significant energy savings while keeping maintenance costs low.

Rendezvous Casino is situated on Brighton marina and brings the best gaming experience to the buzzing city with two unique gaming floors and experiences. Before the re-lamping took place, the previous lighting design was consuming large amounts of energy and costing in excess of £7,000 per annum to run. A key consideration for the project was to create a scheme that curbed resources, lowered the casino’s carbon footprint and ensured all round savings to the business.

Initially a pilot project, the re-lamping brief was expanded to include the entire casino with Sylvania LED lamps used throughout the building including on the gaming floors, restaurant and reception areas. The Sylvania Hi-Spot RefLED ES50, Candle ToLEDo, PAR 30 RefLED and GLS A60 ToLEDo were chosen for their energy saving capabilities and ease of retrofitting.

The Sylvania LEDs were the perfect option as David Roffey of BN Maintenance relates:  “Cost was a serious factor throughout this project, which is why using a variety of Sylvania LED lamps was the obvious answer. Since the installation of energy efficient LEDs, such as the Hi-Spot RefLED ES50, we have seen a 15% reduction on our overall energy consumption. The convenience of having a combination of dimmable LED lamps that fit the most common luminaires prevented the extra cost of replacing existing ones and ensured the re-lamping process ran smoothly. A surprising, but welcome, result was the lack of reflection from hard surfaces. It creates a relaxing environment and prevents unnecessary strain on the eyes which is beneficial for customers visiting the establishment. We were also very impressed with the clean, clear light rendering for the low use of wattage.”

Working with Sylvania, the lighting designers were able to effortlessly replace and integrate new LED lamps into existing fittings. “The convenience of having a wide selection of LED lamps to choose from was a real bonus. We found we had better control over expected light and light rendering in many situations, whether that was interior décor or spot lighting. This, coupled with their dimmable functions, made it easier for us to fix each fitting into the correct position and provide the best light for the area and the objects within it” continues David.

The Hi-Spot RefLed ES50 has been used throughout large areas in the casino including the restaurant and main casino halls. The first retrofit LED to have the power to replace a 50W halogen, the ES50 ensures it can be fitted into all GU10 and GZ10-type luminaries. The 350lm ES50 is available in 2700K Homelight, 3000K Warm white and 4000K Cool white colours with a beam angle of either 25° or 40°; the 25° delivers 1200 candela, and the 40° delivers 600 candela in the warm white colour temperatures.

For this energy efficiency focused project, the GLS A60 RefLED was an obvious choice. Offering up to 75% energy savings compared to incandescent bulbs, the lamp provides a significant contribution to the expected 15% reduction in energy consumption. Available in 5W, 7.5W and 10W, the GLS A60 comes in 2700K homelight, offering a uniform light distribution. The lamp requires little maintenance with 25,000 hours life and is available in E27 and B22 caps, making it perfect for open luminaries.  Additionally the PAR 30 RefLED and Candle ToLEDo were used throughout the casino. The Candle ToLEDo is available in 3W and offers a 2700K and 15,000 hours of life, offering little maintenance and ease of use.
