The National Week of Science and Technology in Brazil Commemorates IYL 2015
The National Week of Science and Technology 2015 (SCNT) in Brazil has the central theme “Light, Science and Life” in connection with the International Year of Light and Light-based Technologies 2015 (IYL 2015). From 19 to 25 October, over 27,000 activities will be organized in 650 cities and small towns around the country with the participation of 2,100 educational and research institutions, schools and community organizations. Around 1,200 of these activities will be dedicated especifically to light and its technologies.
The SNCT in Brazil is celebrated annually, in October, under the coordination of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation and with the collaboration of educational and research institutes and scientific societies, such as the Brazilian Society for the Advancement of Science. The goal of SNCT is to mobilize the population, especially children and teenagers, around themes and activities of science & technology, stimulating creativity, scientific thinking and innovation. It intends to show the importance of science and technology for people´s lives and for the development of the country, and provide an opportunity for the Brazilian population to know and discuss the results and impacts of scientific and technological research and their applications.
Up to now, there are about 27.000 activities registered in the website of the SNCT. One hundred and fifty major events, as science fairs and festivals science in public places, scientific exhibits, mobile science, and events integrating science, culture and art, are scheduled. About 1,200 activities, specifically on light and its technologies, will take place across the country, as conferences, workshops, demonstrations of experiments on light, open days in research institutions, distribution of books, magazines, software and educational kits on science, scientific excursions, programs on radio and television, science on the internet and social networks and exhibition of scientific videos. We hope that in the next week the activities of the International Year of Light and Light-based Technologies will brighten Brazil with the engagement of millions of people.
