Successful start for WE-EF’s Liveable Cities

At the invitation of WE-EF Lighting in the UK, lighting designers, landscape

architects, architects, urban planners and journalists discussed

the meaning of sustainability for the urban living space last month.

Jean Nouvel‘s temporary pavilion in London’s Kensington Gardens offered

an appealing space on a brisk October morning for Breakfast at the Serpentine

Pavilion presentation, in which WE-EF UK invited London’s lighting,

architectural and urban design fraternity. In a relaxed breakfast atmosphere,

guests were introduced to the theme of Liveable Cities by Robert Diedrich, responsible for strategic

marketing at WE-EF and lighting designer and author Phil Gardner (Greyblue

Lighting Design, UK). Behind Liveable Cities is an interactive knowledge

and ideas pool for sustainable and liveable cities. Conceived as an

online handbook, Liveable Cities is part of the WE-EF website, which was

presented to the public for the first time at Frankfurt‘s Light+Building 2010.

With Liveable Cities, WE-EF wants to deepen and communicate the group

of themes pertaining to sustainability in all its diversity. This includes social,

economic and ecological aspects. It is WE-EF’s ambition to replace the one

sided message with dialogue for all parties involved in the planning, design

and implementation of sustainable lighting strategies to public spaces.

Theoretical questions about the sustainability of the urban design solutions

were discussed as well as practical solutions and suggestions for an effi –

cient and at the same time artistically appealing city lighting strategies. An

important goal of the Liveable Cities concept by WE-EF is to expand the

existing knowledge and share this with everyone involved. For WE-EF this

means following a continual learning process, listening and asking the right

questions and entering into an active dialogue with all interested parties.

So the Liveable Cities presentation in London is the start for future events

and workshops, which WE-EF is planning on the theme of sustainability for

the future. The event in London has shown that there is a great need for

such exchange of experience, which – as is usual for WE-EF – also gives

very practical help, for example in comparing the effi ciency of new Technology:

Liveable Cities offers amongst other things an impact calculator,

which you can use to determine the potential for energy and cost saving of

various lighting technology. You will also see and hear more in the coming

weeks when the UK launch is presented in video format on the website…..
