“Sorolla. The art of light” Exhibition in Spain
“The exhibition “Sorolla. The art of light” takes place in Madrid, Spain, between July 14th and January 18th for the celebration of the International Year of Light and Light-based Technologies 2015 (IYL 2015). The exhibition presents 54 interesting oil paintings related to the use of illumination and wishes for visitors to discover the qualities that earned Sorolla the title “Painter of Light”.
At the time Sorolla lived, science had made great strides in unravelling the mysterious nature of light. By the end of 19th century, light had become a more accessible element, changing everyday life. Sorolla’s paintings capture this new situation and use light in a completely novel way.
The exhibition “Sorolla. The art of light” guides the viewer through this transitioning way of seeing light in his paintings. For this reason, the exhibition is organized by the styles in which Sorolla developed this new sensitivity to light: “towards the light”, “shadow and reflection”, “filtered light”, “shining” and “art of light”.
Gardens, forests, the charming landscapes of Spain, and his monuments are some of the characteristic subjects in Sorolla’s world that are represented in the exhibition as well as the Spanish painter’s famous beach scenes renowned for their use of white and stopped motion.
The exhibition features 53 paintings owned by the Museo Sorolla and one painting on loan from a private collection. They can be seen in the Museo Sorolla, located on General Martínez Campos street (Madrid) next to the metro station of “Iglesia”. The museum is open between 9:30 to 20:00 from Tuesday to Saturday and between 10:00 to 15:00 on Sundays and holidays. The Museo Sorolla is closed on Mondays.
