SLL Young Lighter of the Year 2012 open for entries

Young lighters are encouraged to submit their entries for the prestigious Society Light and Lighting Young Lighter of the Year 2012 competition. The competition is open to anyone interested in lighting; they could be interior designers who use light or someone fascinated by light.

The competition provides a chance for young lighting students and professionals to investigate a lighting subject of their choice, and provides a unique platform for them to present their findings. It offers finalists the chance to hone their presentation skills and to win the considerable kudos and professional recognition of being chosen as the SLL Young Lighter of the Year.

Following the submission of the written synopsis, a preliminary shortlist of entrants will be invited to submit a short piece to camera to further explain the premise of their paper. Entries may be based on previously prepared work and must be capable of being presented in 15 minutes during the final.

Last year’s SLL Young Lighter of the Year was Christopher Knowlton, from Design International, who won the award following his presentation on user controlled environments.

“Winning young lighter of the year was fantastic!  The whole process of the competition is a great way to engage with the lighting community, meeting peers and established practitioners alike. Being in the final was an excellent opportunity to practice presenting to an audience of 50+ industry professionals, which in itself is a great experience.  To make it to the final was an honour in itself, to be named winner was wonderful.

“Since winning, I’ve come to realize just how widely recognized the competition is. It’s a great platform from which to meet new people and gain professional recognition.”

Last year’s final drew a huge crowd at the ARC’11 exhibition and the presentations were all very well received. For further details and an entry form visit

Shortlisted finalists will be announced in spring 2012.
