Photographer makes light of Award

Photographer Duncan Lawson scooped the national Lighting Design Photography Award with two stunning architectural images.

The Eastbourne based photographer won with his atmospheric photos of the Golden Jubilee Bridge in London, which was commissioned by structural engineers Gifford UK, and Steps at La Defense, Paris.

The highly respected judging panel included James Newton, one of the top architectural lighting photographers. Newton particularly commended the ‘balance of natural and artificial light’ in the Golden Jubilee Bridge image, in which Duncan explained that no filters or Photoshop touches had been used for the sky. Fello judge, David Atkinson, noted ‘ the strong emphasis between the varying colour temperatures and the harmonious quality between the sky and the bridge structure’. Newton also pointed out how the abstract nature of the Steps at La Defense image showed ‘both bold shadows and more subtle lit effects within it’ with Atkinson describing it as ‘very striking’.

The Photography Award was part of the annual Lighting Design Awards, which took place in March.

Duncan Lawson commented: ‘I’m delighted to have won, particularly with it being the inaugral year of the Photography Award.’
