Philips transforms Coltman Street Day Hospital

Philips has transformed the main hall and reception area of the Coltman Street Day Hospital by installing state-of-the-art LED luminaries and an intelligent lighting management system that allows lighting levels to be fully adapted to achieve the required ambience. Before embarking on this project, Philips provided Coltman Street Day Hospital with lighting drawings and visualisations to show what could be achieved using LED lighting.

The day hospital houses Hull Memory Clinic, which is run by Humber NHS Foundation Trust and treats people who have memory problems. It needed an LED lighting solution that would help turn its main function room into a truly multipurpose space where people felt comfortable during the day, as well as in the evenings. The hospital also required a space that could serve as an ideal venue for hosting key celebrations around festivities such as Christmas.

As a leader in LED lighting, Philips was able to provide the day hospital with a flexible and adaptable lighting solution. Furthermore, due to the ultra-long life of LEDs, coupled with their high energy efficiency, Philips’ lighting solution also offered the day hospital significant energy and maintenance savings, with the quality of light complimenting the desire to enhance patient’s lives using light.

The main hall was fitted using highly energy-efficient and dimmable DALI Luxspace Compact /Mini luminaires in order to provide the space with a fully dimmable lighting solution that could be adapted to create the desired atmosphere. Additionally, the Luxspace Compact / Mini uses less power without compromising on light quality. It is a true ‘fit and forget’ solution that is easy to install and achieves 70% lumen maintenance after  50,000 hours.

In order to give the illusion of brightness outside during the dark winter afternoons and evenings, Philips equipped the main hall’s high level windows with the next generation of high-quality linear LED cove lighting, giving the walls a unique glow effect.  Philips’ eW Cove QLX Powercore not only delivers excellent light output, but it is energy-efficient, has a long lifetime and is a low maintenance luminaire.

To further enhance the lighting, Philips used the Spot LED 3 to add extra sparkle to the space. The Spot LED 3 also offers incredible energy savings and reduced maintenance, while achieving unparalleled light output through its 3 X LUXEON K2 high-power LEDs. It is up to 45% more energy efficient than low-voltage standard halogen solutions and up to 65% more energy efficient than mains-voltage halogen with comparable light output. To complete the project, Philips also installed Essential LED downlights that provide excellent illumination with minimal power consumption, providing energy savings of up to 80%.

Rob Atkinson, senior estates development officer for Humber NHS Foundation Trust, said, “Philips’ LED lighting solution has opened up new possibilities of how we can use this single space for a host of different functions. With Philips’ lighting controls system we have full flexibility to change the ambience. The advanced lighting solutions have enhanced the area’s atmosphere, giving it a more comfortable and modern feel. As a treatment centre, our patients are the top priority for us, so it is essential that we are able to create the right environment to enhance their well being.  The Philips LED lighting solution not only provides excellent light quality but allows us to adapt and tailor the environment to their needs, and our requirements of the space.”
