Mark Ridler appointed ILP Architectural Lighting Vice President

The Institution of Lighting Professionals  has announced the appointment of Mark Ridler as Vice President with special responsibility for Architectural Lighting. Ridler joins five Vice Presidents appointed following the Institution’s restructuring last September, and in the words of President Alistair Scott: ‘The long term aim of the ILP is to develop a wide range of member services embracing the whole lighting profession. Mark is uniquely placed to spearhead our drive to reach out to a rapidly evolving discipline.’

With 26 years experience, and currently lighting director at BDP, Ridler believes that collaboration is essential for great design. He has authored the PLDA ethics policy, and is one of the founders of the Joined Up Lighting initiative.

As an existing member of the Institution, Ridler has recently attained Chartered Engineer registration via the ILP, using the ILP Competency scheme as a basis for demonstrating that registration is attainable for lighting professionals who are not working in traditional engineering roles.

Scott says: ‘The emergence of the ILP is the culmination of an evolving process which recognises that lighting is a combination of art, science and engineering, and great lighting projects require input from lighting professionals from different disciplines. Becoming a full member of the ILP is an essential facet of the national drive towards competency, and Mark’s appointment demonstrates that there is no longer a divide between the lighting designer and the lighting engineer.’

Over the coming weeks Ridler will develop a brief for the new Vice President role which will lead into the ILP’s development plan. Commenting on his appointment, Ridler says: ‘I believe it is a great opportunity to progress the lighting design agenda through a forward looking organisation dedicated to uniting the discipline of engineering and design. The emerging profession of lighting design is too fragmented and disparate. My aim is to assist the drive towards greater professionalism and better communication with the non-lighting community.’
