CHAUVET DJ the light choice for Shadow Lounge

Effects lighting from the CHAUVET DJ range has recently been specified by Northern Light for the refurbishment of Shadow Lounge, Novus Leisure’s exclusive gay venue in London’s Soho.

Northern Light prepared a detailed system design for the venue featuring CHAUVET DJ lighting. Working closely with Kaleidovision – the long-term content provider to Novus Leisure, Northern Light presented an exciting video and lighting proposal to the Novus board. Impressed by the proposal and Northern Light’s extensive installation credentials they were awarded the contract.

Northern Light’s Martin Tarpy reflected on the project: “Working in a difficult and restrictive environment in Soho, Northern Light overcame many logistical challenges to deliver the project on time and on budget. The CHAUVET DJ products were a ‘natural choice’ to satisfy the lighting element of the design. Chauvet represents value and flexibility when trying to meet a client’s brief, plus you can rely on the Chauvet brands for peace of mind as the fixtures work without a hitch.”

The ultimate goal was to create an immersive environment using video and lighting but with the lines blurred as to where one medium ended and the other begun. As the lighting products would be ceiling-suspended and integrated into a larger feature of video tiles in the basement venue, the relative light output and compact nature of the CHAUVET DJ light heads served well.

Secreted amongst the ceiling’s abstract arrangement of video tiling, which accounts for over fifty per cent of the total surface area, sit six CHAUVET DJ Intimidator Scan LED 300 fixtures and four CHAUVET DJ Intimidator Barrel LED 300 units instigating mid air effects, six CHAUVET DJ Intimidator Spot LED 350 moving head and a single CHAUVET DJ Hurricane 1800 Flex fog machine.

Each light head packs a powerful punch far above its weight: the CHAUVET DJ Intimidator Spot LED 350 moving heads are brighter than most 90-watt LED fixtures but feature optic-boosted 75-watt LEDs. Prisms enhance the scope and coverage of these fixtures and the CHAUVET DJ Intimidator Barrel LED 300 units, whilst all project crisp gobo images thanks to the top-class motorised focus that sets Chauvet lighting apart.

Working alongside Martin Tarpy, Greg McLenahan of Worldwide Lighting Design, provided creative input for the lighting design and programming. He recommended the CHAUVET DJ LED range for its reliability and build-quality, “Chauvet fixtures consistently meet very high build standards: They do exactly as they say they do. I can’t rate them highly enough and would recommend them for any installation or project – because I know they will work and keep working as I expect.”

Shadow Lounge general manager, Dani Gibbison confirms the club has been transformed by the overall installation, in which the Chauvet lighting plays its part, adding, “…the new concept has been extremely well received.”
