ACDC introduces Daniel Hodgson..

Daniel Hodgson is the latest high level recruit to join the growing ACDC Team. Following 10 years working as a well-respected designer for a number of the UK’s leading lighting design houses – including Campbell Design and more recently BDP Lighting, ACDC persuaded him to move ‘up north’ to head up the company’s award-winning Product Design Team. Dan brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the role and his remit is to ensure that ACDC continues to develop products which are market leading not only in terms of LED technology, but also in terms of quality of product design.

After graduating from Salford University with a BSc degree in Product Design, Dan went on to study for an MA in Industrial Design at the famous Central Saint Martin’s College of Art and Design in London. Whilst in London he also completed a post graduate diploma in light and lighting. Interestingly, Dan fell in love with lighting by chance, whilst working on an educational project at St Martin’s, he explains: “I was last into a design audit meeting for a public realm from Piccadilly through to Covent Garden with Westminster Council – so lighting was all that was left! I knew very little about specialist lighting at the time but I threw myself into it and found it absolutely fascinating. In fact, I liked it so much that I decided to focus on it for my major project and ultimately forged a career out of it.”

Prior to his new appointment, Dan was a specifier of ACDC products, he says: “The brand values of ACDC have always encouraged me to specify them as I saw them as a trusted point of contact as a supplier. They were always very supportive of the designer and the specification too. I therefore didn’t hesitate when I was offered the opportunity to become Head of Design and be part of an innovative, evolving technology – the biggest task, if I’m honest, was convincing my wife to move north!”

Dan’s immediate focus is to engage with ACDC clients and establish exactly what they expect and require from the next generation of ACDC LED Luminaries. Recently visiting many of the UK’s top lighting specifiers to present prototypes of the company’s new product ideas, he developed an excellent overview of their thoughts and reactions. Dan adds; “the key to a successful product launch is good communication between the ACDC Design Team and the specifiers to ensure that ACDC design to a demand whilst providing new opportunities”.

Dan is currently working on a new range of fittings to be unveiled as prototypes at this year’s 100% Design exhibition in September – including a family of simple, square, deep-recessed LED downlights with an adjustable version; a family of lockable, recessed, adjustable LED downlights and a new range of gimbal downlights, all of which will provide a light output equivalent to 20 and 35w Metal Halide.  In addition, ACDC will be launching a surface-mounted wall uplight, capable of grazing building facades with outstanding power and a bunch of accessories to shield and manipulate the light spread – exciting times at ACDC!

So how does Dan relax after a hard day in the office? He unwinds by cooking up more creations in the kitchen and also enjoys a “good pint”. Well, he’ll certainly get plenty of those up north!
